Ampeg ss-140c…is this a legit alternative to all stupidly priced vh-140c’s?
Randall rg100 classic…. Will this give me my dime fix? Not familiar with this one honestly. Is it a reissue of the rg100’s and when did they release them? Thanks folks!

I've never tried the Ampegs but I had an RG-100 classic and while I never had it side by side with an older RG-100, it seemed the same to me. Ot was an awesome amp and had no problem hanging with a 6505+ I had at the time.

the Crate VTX's and GT3500 i believe are vh140c's. my peavey supreme 160 has grown a lot on me lately, i dont think they are going for too much yet. ive not played one, but some of the things i hear from the Katana V3 are pretty impressive for $400 new

Could also consider some preamp pedals that cop those tones. VHD is pretty faithful to VH140C. The thisheavyearth fleshrot is not as faithful but more flexible. I haven’t used my GX130 much since I got both of those.

Thisheavyearth also does a slaughter pedal that cops peavey supreme tones. I haven’t A/B’d them but it sounds like a slightly nicer version of the supreme I played 20 years ago.

A lot of the old crate/peavey/ampeg stuff needs caps changed on it and other maintenance. The Peaveys are more tank like but the ampeg and crate stuff is often pretty beat (pots jacks etc).

Thanks mike! There’s almost zero information on the classics. Does it have any push/pull pots?

I would love to try a supreme. Is that the one with the xl or xxl badging on it? I will check out the crates. I thought it was some 600 model that some death metal bands used…

Wayne makes his vh140 preamp pedal and my bro mike loves his. His friend gigs with the amd and he prefers Wayne’s….

no mines one of the old blue stripe ones, peavey has the pedal version now too they just released. the new version and xxl's though im sure are probably decent. i think youre thinking of the real old G600 crates or whatever they were called, the gx130c is the good one. the fender metalhead is great too, but thats more like a SS recto than dimeish kind of tones

I had a vh140c and it sounded great, but always cut out and come back in a few seconds later. I traded it straight up for a Boogie studio 22. Both of us were happy with the trade.

Although the vh140c sounded great, I do not miss that piece of shit one bit. It was like eating the frosting off of a cupcake. It's good but it's too sweet, all the time, no umph. I imagine it would blend in well with the Boogie if I ran them together.

Do you still have the Dual Baby? I think that amp sounds amazing. Gotta admit, I'm getting some great tones with the Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 and the Friedman IR-D. You could get a SD and then run a good preamp into it.
