The XXL is actually a pretty badass amp. You can find them for $300 used pretty easily. I'd go with that if I were on your budget.

There's a couple on Guitar Center used for $199.99, hoping maybe I can find some coupons. Does anyone know if the 5150 footswitch is compatible?

it's not, the xxl footswitch has a DIN connector, instead of using 1/4" jacks

I can also vouch for the XXL. Killer solid state. I used to own one and kinda wish I had never gotten rid of it.

Also the Randall RG100HT or RG100ES are killer. I scored my rackmount RG100ES head for $60.

The Ampeg VH140C is awesome as well. The Crate GX-130C is a VERY similar amp and can be found for around $100.00

The Ampeg ss140, ss150 are very similar to the vh140, but mono and cheaper. Ss150 is brutal as Hell.

The Dime amps are amazing for the price tag that's on them, the Ampeg is a solid choice though, love mine.

5150II footswitch is DIN too if you can find one of them.

VH140C do have volume problems, but are more than loud enough for most players. It didn't cut it for me, although one of my favorite amps I've owned.

Lead 100 Mosfet is a good suggestion. Used to run it thru an Ampeg V4 and it sounded glorious. XXL's sound decent. Crate Powerblock is another good one. They should start making them again. Great little unit.

What volume.problems? Are people saying they are not loud enough?

Randall Cyclones or Titans are crushing metal amps. You can usually pick them up for $250-$300. Also, the Randall RH300 is pretty good and can be had for under $200.

It wasn't for my situation, which was more excessive than what most people need. I can't imagine that being a complaint you'd hear often though, unless people expect a 140w solid state to compete with a 100/120w tube amp.

rg100es. ive had both the ampeg and the randalls, for sheer death metal sizzle the ampeg was sick; but the randall had more of a marshall flavor, sounded better as you turned it up, and with a boost, had more gain than you could use...
a friend had the ss-150, and i preferred his to the vh140.. just more mid knock imo.

peavey also made a "supreme" amp head. i preferred it to the xxl myself and they can be had for aroudn 100 bucks from guitar centers used section. it is the xl, before it was renamed the xxl from the info i have gathered.

Not "high gain", but the little Marshall Lead 12 has always been a great amp and capable of gainy tones with an OD pedal in front. I bought one in '86 and sold it several years later. Just picked-up another one this year for old time sake and really dug it as a practice amp. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it in months because a buddy borrowed it and evidently is still enjoying the crap out of it.

Also, the Crate Powerblock is another great suggestion. I had a pair of them that I ran in stereo at home for practice, and hauled one around to gigs as a backup for my tube heads. Sold them both last year and wish I'd have kept one.

The Marshall Valvestate 8100 (chuck Schuldiner's sound)

Is that what he used in the late 1980s? Or later on?

The album sounds like a fizzy dirt pedal, but I like their live guitar sounds. Much more growly and organic.

I love this particular sound- one of the best high gain Marshall sounds of all. So beastly- it really is "brutal"

By the looks of of video, it looks like they have valve amps, not the 8100. Still, is it?

I would say marshall 8200 bi chours valve stated it was made in the early 90's awsome amp
