These are old and have probably been posted before, but I hadn't seen them until recently. Some rehearsal vids, looks to be around the time of their debut album. His Marshall was screaming! Was that thing stock?

I loved this band so much....I think Jake used a Boss OD with the level maxed into a stock Marshall....
 
...and .....that kid is deaf now ...
I cannot imagine how loud that is ..you can hear the vibration when he goes from clean to crunch in winters call .
Ray had an amazing voice .super tight band ..Very cool posting
 
I LOVE Badlands more then any man should, lol. I saw these before, but thanks for the reminder! \m/
 
Streets Cry Freedom is my favorite Badlands tunes. Nice find here!
 
I still have the debut cd that I bought in 89? Also have the original tab book. I broke it out a couple weeks ago and had some fun. those vids are great. Such a shame about Ray.

Yeah he used an OD-1 alot, with all different types of Marshall's. When I saw them in 90 & 91 he had a JCM 800 & 900. Here's a rough break down of what he recorded with:

Badlands

White Charvel/Fender Stratocaster (used on the majority of Badlands recordings and live performances)

DiMarzio SDS1 single coil pickups (always)

Seymour Duncan Alan Holdsworth prototype humbucker (used early on, but replaced with a JB)

Seymour Duncan JB humbucker

Boss OD-1 Overdrive (Live: Level on maximum, Overdrive on 7 o'clock) (Studio: Level on maximum, Overdrive varied between 8 and 12 o'clock)

Pete Cornish 25db Linear Boost set to 10db (for solos)

Uni-Vibe

Crybaby Wah

'68 Marshall Plexi (warmer, bluesy sound)

'69 Marshall Plexi (edgier, more metallic sound)

Old Marshall JTM45 (combination of the other two - dirty, but smooth)

Older steel-handled Marshall 4x12 with 4 ElectroVoice EVM12L speakers

Roland JC-120 - cleaner parts

"Whiskey Dust" - Jerry Jones guitar (Lipstick pickups)

"3 Day Funk" - 1962 Gibson SG/TV (P90 pickup)

"Silver Horses" - White Charvel/Fender Stratocaster, Unicorn Chorus)

'Rumblin Train' has my favorite Jake solo and solo tone. Just badass in every way.

When the first album came out, most of the people I knew were not impressed with the production because it didn't sound as polished as other albums of the time period. I disagreed. That is what a rock guitar SHOULD sound like. Raw, real, and in your face. Great vocals too, Ray was one of my favorites.

Those guys meant what they were playing. Trixter, Firehouse...not so much I would think.
 
one of the best raw rock bands to come out of the last 30 years. cry of love was another. the timing was bad...nirvana era. but had these guys come out to plug the atrocious glam leak before nirvana, it would have worked much better.

nirvana's musicianship pretty much stank, but i'd take them any day over the last few glam metal bands i saw back in the waning years of metal.

That kid has to have earplugs in. She is dancing in the kill zone of the 4X12 without flinching.
 
Love this band and tone ! I have tried to get my buddy Alan from Carol Ann to built an amp that sounds identical to this since he has a long history with old marshalls with no luck. Killer.
 
Thanks for these vids. I downloaded them. I can't get enough of Badlands.

Jake was great.

Ray Gillan is my favorite singer of all time. His tone and vibrato influenced me as a guitar player more than just about any guitar player did. I really try to just emulate Rays voice. Tone. :thumbsup:

with the talent in that band, I was always amazed they didn't blow up. Timing is everything I guess.
