I’m asked on a regular basis about low output pickups. It’s not that I can’t, don’t, or won’t, it’s just that I’ve always felt the market is saturated with lower output handwound pickups, whereas there’s not nearly the amount of options for handwound high output. I’m to the point that I’m more open to trying a few offerings,, but with some not so common recipes. What I have here is my 7d8 and my Dry’d Z.
The 7d8 is my take on the 78. It’s 9.2k/A2, but with a pretty substantial asymetric offset, but heavier on the screw coil. While Duncan is symmetric, I’ve always felt the early VH tones had ratty upper midrange and top end. And since the screw coil is closest to the bridge, you get a strong upper midrange boost and the dual resonant peaks of the offset coils. I think this works out great in Les Pauls. I might not be as aggressive with the offset in a Strat type though. I’m still refining this.
The Dry’d Z is my take on the infamous Greco Dry Z that fetches stupid money. While I am personally not a big fan on the Dry Z in the bridge, I think it’s hard to beat in the neck. Because of the low strength A3 magnet, I wind it a little higher output and a little more scatter to balance things out, but it balances well with most bridges when I donor this way.
Anyway, I’ll leave this here Played through my Greco EG1000D and the awesome Ground Zero MOAB
