And by "someone" I mean Larry. Apparently Monster Cables is/was a patent troll, and made the mistake of going after a former lawyer turned cable maker, who then nailed Monster to the wall in his 6-page reply. Unfortunately Monster was smart enough to back down. Details here: https://www.bluejeanscable.com/legal/mcp/index.htm

Fingers crossed he decides to order a Larry at some point, the fireworks would be spectacular.

I mean, in Larry's case, Fortin quite obviously and deliberately one for one copied a bunch of his very distinctive circuits and ideas, so if anything Larry would be more akin to "Kurt" from blue jeans in this story; if Randall or Dover or one of Fartin's employers sued him.

That would also be entertaining. Reminds me of Steve Fryette talking about how Peavey ripped off his depth/resonance control, patented it, then went around trolling everyone except him.

I mean, as far as I know that situation is similar to the Rectifier/SLO situation - it's more that Peavey copied his distinctive, exact way of tying a resonance to negative feedback, not that Fryette was trying to claim he invented the resonance control or something

I've had a couple instances of people stealing song, lyric, and musical ideas from me and have a special ire for that specific kind of IP theft - it's why I refuse to buy most chinese-made gear of all types

I think he is? At least that's how I understand what he's said on the Malcontents, and apparently here on RT:
So the "Depth" or Resonance" control that everyone uses today is different than those above and did not exist on any product before the introduction of the 2150 Power Amp, the design of which is based on my original Pittbull prototype from 1987, and started shipping in 1989 - two years before PV released their 5150 with the identical circuit. This circuit is essentially a variable high-pass filter in the feedback loop and can be used in series or in parallel with a low-pass feedback network typically used to linearize the frequency response of a power amplifier. Its purpose is to allow the amplifiers output stage to become more reactive at the resonant frequency of the speaker/cab combination connected to it, and to control the intensity of that reactance. Essentially, a low frequency Presence control.

Though it seems I was mistaken in remembering Peavey as going after people, as he says he's unaware of them trying to enforce it. I must have inferred that erroneously when he highlighted Peavey not going after him.

You mean claiming credit for someone else's work?

I think James Brown is on here once in a while? We could literally ask him, if someone knows his username

So he actually did rip off Larry? There was too much crossfire in previous threads to actually understand if Larry had a genuine claim.

I miss Larry being on here. In fact I probably wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for getting banned from TGP in one of his threads.

He posted photographic evidence along with all the necessary deets.

Was pretty-convincing IMHO.

Yep, he explained it in pretty exhaustive detail with pictures and email receipts of his convos with MF, the only way you can really defend fortin is by playing the "everyone else is stealing circuits TOO!" pokemon card

Which i mean, yeah, if that's convincing to anyone, more power to ya but there's a huge difference between being "inspired" by something and ripping it off, and everyone seems to know the difference in every other walk of life

Technically neither of them really can claim it as new - there’s reference material that described how to do what we do now way back in the 50’s published by RCA.

It’s sad. Years before Fortin blew up, I used to watch demo vids of his Bones. I thought that was the ultimate dream amp for me. Didn’t realise he was a d.

I wondered if that might be the case, given that "The tube manuals did it first" seems to be a common trend. Radiotron?

Yep you got it. I have an ultra rare, physical printed copy on my bookshelf. It’s where I got the idea for my company. It’s comical how elementary some of the chapters are and others are more advanced topics typically seen in undergrad.

I know nothing of the whole story, but didn't one party rip off some people before those were made public? Was it related to that in any way? :dunno:

This was long before any of that happened, like multiple years

Green with envy.:worship_gray:

Ah, right! I knew it referred to tubes (they used to be called radiotrons I think?), but didn't make the connection that the book inspired the name.

Yeah exactly! Back in the day tubes were called thermionic valves or radiotrons. I enjoy combining cutting edge design with old school knowledge so that’s how the business name came about. I’m happy with it and glad others draw the connection too no pun intended :)
