Don't like it don't listen , it doesn't mean it has no value.

To use the same logic,

Just because you like them, doesn't mean it has value.

Personally, I think they suck hole!

Wrong, I don't like it because it has value ; I just like it.

these dudes are calling it crap because they don't like it...

"And ayup... pretty lame. Hard to believe that musicians are working hard at their craft and chops all over the world"

This is stupid coming from a rock and roll background

You do not need very much chops for certain styles, simple, wanna get your rock ass busted join jazzers and classical musicians... every gospel chops drummer is laughing about most hard rock drummer´s musicianship

Kai

My background is MUCH more than just rock. I've studied and performed classical guitar, jazz, blues, flamenco, country, bluegrass, etc.

I don't listen to most rock for the chops. When I wanna hear chops, I'll put on some old Sabicas (the Segovia of flamenco IMO) records. When I wanna hear complete technical mastery, I'll put on some John Williams or Allan Holdsworth (or Govan of course).

I listen to rock for the agression and the vibe. I'm MUCH more likely to be cranking up AIC these days than I am Dream Theater, etc.

Having said that... I just can't deal with famous "musicians" who are crappy and play/sound like they are still just 10 years old, playing on their first guitar and amp.

Doesn't mean I care if others like it. But I'll call it what it is (to me)... and that's sloppy, weird crap.

In fact, I had a buddy texting me last night who also happened to be watching Sonic Youth on ACL and he was thinking the same things I was. He changed the channel after a song or two. I kept watching because it really did fascinate me. I wanted to see if I could grab ahold of anything in there as being actual, respectable musicianship to me. I told him that continuing to watch the show was like "smelling my own farts". Just had to see if the smell would continue to get worse.

Btw... I've also noticed these kinds of bands' tendency to love playing fugly-ass guitars like jag-stangs, jag-offs, etc. Just the usual counter-culture, "I'm gonna do EVERYTHING different than the guitar gods that have always been held over my head" stuff to me. Which is fine. But some actual ability and knowledge of the instrument would be nice regardless.

But it is has (in contrast to other mainstream rock band) texture and uniqueness, which is often better and has more impact than "musicianship" playing faceless lame, corny diddely crap...

good bad music > (is better than) bad good music

Simple as this, as it is about getting something across

good music => communication, language, expression making a statement, destroying normal routine

Which can be annoying as everything which is forced, you are right on this one.

For me, (alternative) music is about playing together in a band, listening to each other inside the band, not corny hero with big shrinkled penis masturbating always the same runs...

That they play Jaguar, they were pretty cheap when they started, main reason, sonic youth have (need) a differently tuned guitar for each song in their set.....

They could simply add a gospel chops drummer like Thomas Pridgen, but often (see Mars Volta) it does not have a big effect. I cannot stand listen to them (MV).....boring, always lot of extremely bad annoying solo guitar playing and singing over the edge, there it does not work.....sonic youth? No solo spots, mostly texture, cluster => different story.

btw.
This is kitsch
respectable musicianship

Then every picture would look like a Dürer => extremely boring

Kai

the way a lot of you guys feel about sonic youth is how i feel about nirvana as musicians...dont get me wrong, i get why the unwashed masses love nirvana, but, as a musician, i see no musical value to nirvana.

Red,

Jags and Jazzmasters have huge sonic value...... The unique and singular trem bar the weird haunting sustain behind bridge -- the "twionks" from hitting behind the bridge -- in the case of the Jag the juxtaposition of the gibson scale and fender woods-- and in the case of the Jazzmaster a Much more solid bridge pick-up sound than a start..... (again in-between fender and gibson/while being a less heard sound...)

Sorry but you are talking out of your ass

I worked in a record store at the height of their popularity (I think?) and had a buddy who idolized them and played them frequently whenever it was his turn to spin an album. I personally think its pretentious garbage masquerading as art (much like Henry Kaiser or Derek Bailey), but to each their own.

Sorry, but 1 virtuoso > 4 or 5 hacks who haven't washed their underwear for 2 weeks and play music for girls who wipe from their asses into their vaginas.

Come to Europe see the crowd, less fat than gary moore (Misses Marple) and Ozzy, quite sober, educated, no guns, 50 percent women....easy!

For your silly talk you will probably get you ass smaked by a cool women which knowledge of karate, fast and easy, in front of your friends....hihi, she will probably spend your non existent health care, because she actually earns more money than you...simple

Btw. Did you know that Imogen Heap joined Jeff Beck on stage live? Think about it....    was certainly better than Gary Moore´s drum and bass disaster (remember the above "bad good music")!

I'm 27 and married to a former amateur model who is 28 and listens to Joe Bonamassa. I have no need for your dirty hipster women.

It's "Miss Marple". Get your Agatha Christie characters right. Ironic, since you write about how educated you are. You shouldn't speak for educated Europeans. They clearly know the difference since so many of them attend colleges in the United States.

I'm not sure what the hell you were trying to convey after your moronic karate schtick. Attend my US college and let me school you in the structure and form of English. I can also teach you how to construct an outline prior to composing so you can stay on topic.

I own the Ronnie Scott's DVD and am aware of Imogen Heap. Her voice pains me and Beth Hart owns her.

Ok Miss Marple, you saw the films probably more often!  :D

Yes, I prefer Imogen Heaps solo work more than later Jeff Beck! Check "Hide and See" compare with boring Janis Joplin wannabee Hart!

I wish you a good "Rutsch ins Neue Jahr!"

No, I actually read.

Different doesn't mean better.

I remember years ago picking up a guitar mag and reading about SY. They talked about using kitchen utensils to hit against the guitar to create different sounds (probably would have been a good idea to learn how to play the damn thing first) and a bunch of other bull shit such as not owning a guitar prior to recording one of their albums. That interview I read years ago never sat well w/me. I guess you could plug the amp in your ass and fart a powercord and since it would be considered "different" some would hail it as art... To each his/her own…

Pfff! Why learn to play it and explore the intricacies when you can just record the sound of your nut sack slapping up against it?
