Sound like Deftones from the late 90s/early 2000s

Hey all,

I wanted to do another attempt at getting that classic Around The Fur / White Pony era guitar tone. I tried it before but I wanted to see if I could come even closer this time around.

I used my trusty ESP LTD SC-20 with the SD JB pickup and my Marshall JMP-1 into the JVM410H poweramp. However, since you can't get the JMP-1 anymore, I wanted to see if I could come close with the JVM410H as well and compare the two while we're at it. I think I got at least somewhat close without adding any EQ etc. I wanted to keep the tone as simple and pure as possible... It's not an easy tone to replicate 100% but I think I got pretty close.

Love the Deftones, especially the White Pony album. The Jmp-1 is by far my favorite Marshall, and I don't typically like Marshall's that much but the jmp-1 is great. Stephan had a great sound and playing style around that time. I think you got pretty close, but it does sound a bit more modern with those v30's.

Cheers! Yeah I know, it's pretty hard to replicate those tones exactly because they sound so specific.
 
When I think of the Deftones sound, I think of the snare and the vocal (more phrasing than tone), which is weird in such a guitar-heavy band. I think your video sounds awesome, and the tones are more than close enough. Killer tones. Made me want a JMP.
 
Well, I have not stopped looking at JMPs (the preamp version) since I saw this. So, thanks for that. :D

Anyone care to talk me out of it?

I have a Suhr pt-15, closest thing I have ever really had to a Marshall. Is there a point to the JMP when you start talking IR/cabs/does it get me anything the Suhr does not? I played my buddys JVM for a while...that is a beast. I want one of those...but there is a large $$$ gap. The JMP-1 preamp I can swing.
 
Never could gel with those pre’s. Too cold or sterile sounding compared to a head. IIRC there’s only two preamp tubes and neither is actually used for drive. Mostly done with op amps and diode clipping. So basically a solid state preamp..lol
 
Sounds like the Deftones amp tone to me... both the JMP1 and JVM Good job.....

I played a JMP1 years ago and thought it left alot to be desired as a true blue Marshall guy and what I like from my 68, 72 and 79 Marshalls... but if you like it or love it it's all up to your ears. :2thumbsup:
 
Iirc there is one tube in the gain channel of the jmp1, which is a single gain stage and cathode follower. Cant imagine it contributes much, I’m surprised we haven’t seen anyone try to replicate the gain channel in a pedal yet (unless I missed it). I bet it could be done convincingly without the tube.
