Spider Valve.... has me thinking some crazy thoughts

Seriously spent alot of time with this amp this weekend. The amp is actually really really cool. I had bought it for a grab and go all in one for very small gigs. First I never even listened to the presets not even one. Jumped right in on a patch and twisted knobs to turn off the effects and started dialing tones on a the various models using my ears. You know the amp sounds really good IMHO. The combo alone is very punchy and then I plugged in my 2x12 and it got even bigger so it would really work for me in a rock band situation where a 1x12 would be what I would want. So then I decided well lets hear the VHT SigX eat it up. Plugged in to the VHT and while it really sounded good and had a bit better tone and feel.... it by no means ate the SV for lunch, not even close. Scary thing in some ways I prefered the SV and in some ways liked te VHT a bit better but not huge preference of one over the other.

So here is the crazy thoughts..... I'm seriously seriously considering dumping a bunch of gear like the SigX and my GSystem and few other things, just using the SV with a 2x12 and some pedals and get this which I have been wanting ever since I've moved back to my hometown and I have a place to ride.

It's only crazy if you regret it later or it hurts someone else.

On other words, do what the hell you want! :)

The SV is a really cool little amp that doesn't sound little by any means. I think I'm going to use my 112 at my next show in 2 weeks.

i wouldnt do it, i usually gig with a mark iv and a gsystem. i have the SV 112, last month i decided to try it out on a gig and it was just an awful experience. i think it gets killer tones in my house, and even for lower volume rehearsing with band and stuff, but live it just sounded like crap, that was my experience anyways. i would hate you to sell all your stuff only to realize you dont get the same tones live you got home...

DO IT (and welcome to my recent gear experiences!)

PS - Except please get a real bike. :)

  Well...... I wasnt going to do anything like this until I played the SV this weekend. Again not that the SV blows away all this gear but you know, for what Im doing it's more than good enough and I wont have all this money tied up into gear like Im some touring pro. It does sound like we've had a simular experience here lately. I still think there is high end gear that sounds good but yeah there is cheaper stuff that sounds really good and gets done what we need done.

Ive been itching to hit the trails for about 2 years now and I've dropped about 40 lbs and feeling good so I thought Id get a good trail bike and trust me this bike is a "real" bike. She's a WR450 and has plenty of thump and get up go.

I dont do street bikes man. No offense but I would never ever own one nor ride one and I've ridden motorcylces since I was 12 but had to stop when I moved to Nashville.... so I know how to ride. It's just that I've known way too many people who have been seriously hurt or killed. A good friend lost his lower part of his left leg, two good friends and three people I just kinda knew were killed on street bikes. I'll stick to the trails where if I dont ride stupid... a tree isnt going to pull out in front of me or pull over on me in my lane. Also I wont be called a pussy for wearing a full helmet on a trail. :D

Thanks for the input! Oh yeah I'll play it live for a few gigs before I do anything and make sure it should work in all my situations. That said I can tell pretty much from home use and playing along with backing through my PA if it has a good chance of working but yeah you HAVE to play it live to make sure. However the thing about live is you have to use it more than once as rooms and the electrical aspects of different buildings can wreak havoc with your tone. I have had great sounding expensive amps sound like crap at some gigs so IMHO basing the SV ability to do live work on one gig isnt a good thing. Also there quite a few people here and on TGP who have been using them live now for awhile and have a good success so we'll see.

I use it live with a 2x12. It sounds great. However, I usually do a couple things that I've found to work with when the amp is cranked up: Drop the presence to almost zero. Also, don't use hi-fi cables....get the GC specials. I know it sounds weird and so not tone-snob like, but a crappy cable that bleeds of some of the high end actually works well with this set up.

Thanks for the tips and I'll give them a shotand we'll see how it goes at the next few gigs.

Ed D ..I think used one of the heads live at some fairly large gigs for his country band .

Ashba from Nikki sixx's band uses the heads in the studio and live and his tone is decent

Ha ha... Well yeah, I was joking about the "real bike" part! :)

I wish you could check out this Twin and Plextortion pedal. It is freaking awesome.

  I knew you were joking. Yeah I wish I could hear it too. Ive heard clips of his pedals that sounded really good. I heard a clip of one he did that supposed to be Bogner like that did sound really nice.

BTW please watch yourself on your bike and ride like everyone is out to get you. Not paranoid mind you but always alert. People in cars just dont see bikes as well as they should.

what model are you guys using for lower gain stuff?

You know I was using the metal and insane with teh gains way way down for some lower gina stuf that sounded nice. The blue Blues channel and Crunch amber at first really werent working for me but with alot knob twisting and using my ears I was getting some really cool crinch tones there too

Dont know if this helps but ..based on
Twang amber = Blackface
Twang blue= Tweed bassman

Blues amber =Marshall Jtm crossed with bassman.
Blue blue = Vox Ac30

I believe the Twang Blue is an AC30 hang, my go to model.

:2thumbsup: excellent thread mine replaced a carvin x-100b and leagacy cab that now sits in the closet I think that every amp has it's place, the SV has a versitility that's hard to beat. If you think it sounds good stock retube it. It's a whole different amp!

What tubes did you use?

JJ's 6l6gc EH 12ax7 in v1 and a gt ecc83 phase inverter tube in v2 rebiased to 42mA I tried a lot of combinations in mine and settled on those because they were the smoothest to my ears.

hey Ejecta, I actually also knew a guy that lost the lower left part of his leg...either a coincidence, or the same guy...was he in an accident around Savannah, GA?

To bring my post back on target, I picked up a used SV 112 on the cheap and love it...for all of one day I had with it before I had to leave it (it's staying at my folks house while I deploy)! Hopefully, this is just the start of Bogner + Line6 working together...how much ass would a VettaValve kick?

thank you for your service to the country hope you get back safe
