Splawn Quick Rod.......WOW!

I have an older QuickRod, has 3 gears not the "new" clean channel though.

I tell ya', gear 1...gain at about 12 O'clock, maybe even 11 O'clock, OD2 here and there, can you say VH1 and VH2??

I sold my 72' modded Marshall head after I got this bad boy, why...cause the QR can do all that and MORE!

Boosted for leads (foot switchable solo option is great too) and it made me a believer.

Plus as others have mentioned, Scott is a great guy to deal with.

I have other amps, but the QR is a keeper

In reality though, are they any brighter than say, a JCM 800 2203/2204?

No. My 1983 JCM800 can just take your head off with the highs and the Splawn has so much more low end available it isn't even funny. When I play the Splawn and switch to the JCM800, in all honesty it makes me think something is wrong with my 800. It almost sounds like a transistor radio. And this is the best 800 I have ever heard in 30 years of getting rid of an 800 everytime I found a better one. This is my 5th 800.

I will not argue with danyeo one bit on this. I would describe the clean channel as "useable".

Splawn is an amp that has ruined me for all other amps. I bought a 2010 and having had it for almost 3 years it has given me everything I ever wanted or needed. Every time I play another amp to see if it can beat out the QR, I just don't get that same raw punch of the QR (however the Rhodes amps for different reasons were up there with the Splawn for me as well). It is not an amp that plays by its self on autopilot and I would not want that anyway. You do need to be precise in your playing but what that translates into, is getting a great tone. I think it gets you to play with more emotion and tension which gets such a fantastic sound and why produces and sound guys love them. I have played most every amp that this forum has to offer and for me the Splawn still reigns supreme.

BTW. That new low watt combo amp from Splawn is looking very tempting for me and I need a combo.

Meh...when I had the infamous SLOvenger (100W Soldano Avenger with a DeYoung Transfomer that usally comes only in SLO's) my personal favorite setting was:
Bass on 0
Mids at 3
Treble at 5
Presc at 5 (12 o'clock) with the Depth at 0.
Very VHII sounding.

Killer sounding amp...I actully do miss it alot The modded 800 I still have sent it packing at the time for financial reasons. I miss the AvengeLO...

I have been gassing for a Splawn for quite some time and the Street Rod combo vids on YouTube are not helping There's one with a guy playing an EVH EBMM and it sounds really good.

the one observation i can attest to is we had a big rock concert at our church a few years ago and there were 4 bands with rigs ranging from vht deliverance to marshall jcm 2000 to rectos, triaxis/290, bogner uberschall, etc...

and the standout was the splawn quick rod. it cut through the mix like nothing else that night, string definition and classic twang, but not harsh, not boomy. marshall karang with right amount of tube flesh enveloping the bite.

I have been singing the praises of the Splawn Quick Rod for years and so many people have piped in saying they have weird mids or you can't play leads on them and I just scratch my head. That a monster lead player like you digs the Quick Rod lends a little validation to my argument and helps to show that I am not just pimping these things.

And you as well, man! I'd trust your judgement of an amp over a vast majority of the guys I've seen demo a Splawn on youtube.

Splawns are great value for the buck imho. Plus Scott is a great guy. I have one of the first QR's with shared EQ for the channels along with a Splawn straight 4x12 with guvnors and man o wars. I'm the same way. I play in a Metallica cover band and my Splawn Nitro nails the live Hetfield tone better than any other amp I've ever had.

I actually like a lot of the music, great rhythms and lead work but can't get past the vocal style...I have tried and tried and just gave up on trying, which is kind of sad as there are a lot of cool players I skip over because of the vocals.

Yeah the screaming and growling shit gets old for me, as well. That's why i tend to gravitate towards the groups that have at least some melodic vocals. And this Djent shit seems like a "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit" subgenre.

I bought a new 2006 QR, with the separate clean channel. The amp sounded great and I had no issues with it, just wasn't my sound. They are a little different than a Marshall and either you love or not.

I found it very easy to play thru. Def. not mesa boogie / fuchs kind of easy, but I prefer the former.

I'm interested in hearing more about the TSL that was modded by Voodoo. I have one that is sitting in my spare bedroom that I have thought about having Trace work his magic on. What were your thoughts on that one?

The TSL had a choke added (not by Trace), Trace modded it (not sure what was done, but I believe it's what he typically does to them - nothing crazy), and it had Mercury Magnetics tranformers. That's it.

It sounds killer. To my ears, less "depth" than the Quick Rod.
