the Splawn has so much more low end available it isn't even funny.

That's a major negative to me. I actually have to keep the bass dialed back to less than half on my 800/JMP's or it's too much.

Meh...when I had the infamous SLOvenger (100W Soldano Avenger with a DeYoung Transfomer that usally comes only in SLO's) my personal favorite setting was:
Bass on 0
Mids at 3
Treble at 5
Presc at 5 (12 o'clock) with the Depth at 0.
Very VHII sounding.

Killer sounding amp...I actully do miss it alot :aww: The modded 800 I still have sent it packing at the time for financial reasons. I miss the AvengeLO...

I have been gassing for a Splawn for quite some time and the Street Rod combo vids on YouTube are not helping   There's one with a guy playing an EVH EBMM and it sounds really good.

I played that AvengeLO if it's the same one I'm thinking of. My friend Amplifire bought it off of Ed D, then he sold it off. I remember we had that AvengeLO next to a Cameron modded Bogner XTC, and I thought the Soldano wiped the floor with the modded XTC. But both amps were boosted with an old MIJ Boss Sd-1. I don't know, even modded and boosted Bogners just sound loose and feel lazy to me.

And I too was swayed by Street Rod videos and when I bought one it just didn't work out for me. I didn't like the Street Rod in combo form but I think I'd like the head on a good 4x12. And the mids aren't wierd, they're just very forceful which some players don't like. In a band mix they will cut, alone in your bedroom they can get old fast. IMHO, I would only consider a Splawn if I could crank it with a band. They're simply not bedroom amps....all IMHO.

You must have played an older QR because with the new improved effects volume, the QR is one of the best if not best bedroom amps I have played. I have two kids 2 and under, so naps are frequent. So when I engage the loop for my master volume and crank the front master up to around 12:00 I get a full cranked Marshall sound at mouse whisper levels. There is no hollow, thin, fizzy sound like most amps at that low volume and that feel the Splawn is known for is all there too.

Another thing is that the loop volume has a much better taper so you don't have that Marshall LOUD anything past 1-2 is way to loud, going on. The Splawn master is that way out front too, but the effects loop volume gives you a very smooth taper to get the right volume that you need and still have that percussive feel and sound. Scott Splawn has really evolved these amps to meet the requests and needs of his users. He listens and delivers!

It's odd, they come across in videos really good I wished they sounded like that in the room.

My 800 and JMP's are better bedroom amps than my Splawns were (one had the loop volume too).

Well said

Amazing amps! I will own another sometime! Absolutely one of the most underrated amps IMO...

Hi, when did they add the saturation and adjust the voice? 2012?
Thanks!
Rich

Mark,
I have been singing the praises of the Splawn Quick Rod for years and so many people have piped in saying they have weird mids or you can't play leads on them and I just scratch my head. That a monster lead player like you digs the Quick Rod lends a little validation to my argument and helps to show that I am not just pimping these things.

And yes, the new Quick Rod is voiced slightly differently. It is a bit darker voiced and has more saturation available. You can still get the same tones as the earlier Quick Rods, but that extra bit of saturation is going to be welcomed by many.

I had a 2008 that I really dug, but I sold that to get the 2011. I can still get it to sound just like my old one, but I really think it does sound better. The slightly warmer voicing helps on Gear 1 which is my favorite.

This is another one of those threads that makes me scratch my head. I heard some killer Splawn vids/clips so I ordered a Competition. Loudest 50 watts I ever head. No matter what I did the amp was super bright. I took it over to Ratters and he thought the same. I would love to try another down the road but for now... Jerry at FJA has modded my 5150 and it is fantastic!

I have a 2007 Quick Rod and just got one of the new 2012 Quick Rod models with the new OT. Hard to say which I like better; they both rock your socks off, both great, just different. I'd keep the new one if I could only have one. I also have Bubbastain's old Nitro--now there's some saturation! I never run the gain past 11 o'clock on it. When it had KT88'S, never past 9 o'clock!!

Scott turns out top-quality products at reasonable prices. I am in the Splawn family for life. Just gotta save up for that Super Sport!! That is one mean-sounding amp right there--never thought 6V6s would get that nasty.

Anyone who says a Splawn sounds bad is dialing in the amp with their eyes, not their ears, I can pretty much guarantee you. I saw someone who had the same problem. He wanted to hear something he wasn't getting out of the amp. I sent him away to where he couldn't see the knobs. Kept dialing until he was loving the sound. When I showed him where the knobs were his knee-jerk reaction was, "Well, that can't be right" and went to put the knobs where he "thought" they should be. That's just stupidity. If it sounds exactly like you want, who cares where the knobs are, if the presence is dimed or the mids are full cut. LISTEN, DON'T EYEBALL!!!

They changed the voicing in late 2011. It is a touch darker and a little more saturated. Those are both things people complained about so Scott added that to the circuit if you want it.

I used to run the gain at about 2 o'clock on Gear 1 and now with the new Quick Rod I run it at about 12 or 1 o'clock. Also the bass I used to run at 11 o'clock and now I have it at about 9 o'clock.

There was a thread on the Splawn Fans Forum a few years back by a great player that was in a VH tribute band and it was called Weird Settings - Great Tone or something like that.

But Jim above has owned tons of different amps and has dug some and not liked others. I don't think with him it is a question of not knowing how to dial in an amp with his ears. It's entirely possible he just didn't dig the amp.

Compared to a Marshall, there is no way I would describe a Splawn as too bright. With a JCM800 I am always checking to see if the bass knob is still all the way up. With the Splawn it's at 9 o'clock. Not an overly bright amp at all, especially in this newest revision.

Jim, just play that modded 5150 and dig it. The grass is not always greener buddy! :D

Splawn is the best amp for the money hands down! I have a 2010 QR and a 2012 SR combo both kick and are very dark actually I have to dial the bass back! But for the dollars it can't be matched.

+1... Ya when i read the tread about the amp being bright i was scratching my head...I have owned 2 Splawn QR's and they are not bright at all....I keep my bass down at 9 o clock...For me the 2012's sound the best that i have played yet IMO....Love the amp

I think the QR is a great amp hands down. Had I not scored a good deal on a Marsha, I 'd own one right now (and tonally they are not at all dissimilar).

Just made a deal for my 3rd one. Now I've got a 2005, 2010 and a 2012 incoming. One of the others will likely to have to go, but I can't decide which. Three is just excessive. Isn't it?

QR is definitely my next amp. Just getting through the holidays with the wife and 'lil Evil's. I'll be ordering early January for sure. I am very excited about acquiring one of these monsters.

Considering buying a Street Rod in head format as a back up.

Congrats  ....I think you be happy with the 2012....I had an 09 and when i got the 12 i was right where i wanted to be  IMO best amp out there for the price

I owned one when I had a Cornford MK and a Wizard MC100. I did not care for it but I also did not give it a chance. If you buy a Quickrod do not judge it unless you pair it with the recommended speakers. If you use whatever speakers and cab you have then your opinion does not count at all.
