Splawn Quickrod...or not?

There are a few amps out there that I like a bit more than the Quickrod for that "hot rodded" Marshall tone, but I question if it is worth the price of admission for marginal improvements...and the QR isn't without its own advantages (the "gears" for one). I don't think there is a better value on the market than the QR...it's simply an awesome amp.

Yeah, Scott started out modding Marshalls and making headshells for Marshalls so his Splawns are the same size. There are definitely amps out there that weigh more.

The new Street Rod combo is a 40/20w version of the Quick Rod. The combo won't be as easy to carry obviously. Scott just came out with a head version of this amp though. It looks like it weighs about the same but shorter and possibly not as deep or tall (I'd have to measure).

For some reason I was lead to believe that the QR was this huge beast of an amp, but I guess I was mislead.

It is tone wise

If you are looking for an amp use the Look Up site in my sig and scour the on-line forum classifieds.

Over the last few years, I've owned many of the Splawn heads and presently own the Street Rod combo. Splawn makes great amps, out of great components, in the USA, with great customer service, at a great price!! I'm a big fan.

They have the Marshall tone and gain character more so than the Shiva. If you want more Marshall, go with Splawn.

Splawn heads are the same size and pretty much the same or similar weight of other full size Marshall heads. Marshall covers will fit on Splawn heads. If you really want something smaller than that, you can get the Street Rod in a head format (45W version of the Quick Rod). The Street Rod sounds awesome and, frankly, these amps are so loud I can't imagine the Street Rod not meeting your volume requirement.

There's a Splawn forum full of info and opinions. It might be worth checking that out before making a decision.

I like this one from a splawn forum member.

That is awesome!!

But, recognizing that the snakeskin might not be for everyone.... another nice bonus about buying a new Splawn amp is that you can choose colors and style for tolex, piping, grill cloth, knobs, and panel color. And, unless you get crazy, there's usually no "up charge" for your selections.

Yea I really like how you can customize your amp (to an extent) without any upcharge...I live in NC, anybody know where I can go to play one?

I know they are made in Dallas, NC...maybe I'll shoot Scott an email and see if I can try one out.

oh I hear ya ..I would'nt choose that either . Mine would be all black with white chicken head knobs

I know this thread is about Quick Rods.... I had a QR and PM done in the same color scheme as my Street Rod, pictured below...

Actually, it has a little bit more. That's just not my opinion, if you check with other SR owners on the Splawn forum they seem to have the same opinion.

By the way, are you the same "JB" from "Pick of Destiny"? How's Kyle?

I find the QR is a lot less stiff than the modded Marshalls. The QRs clean up better via the guitar volume knob too.

The stiffness is what has kept me from trying a Splawn. The vids I've seen don't sound like they're stiff though.

That is good to know. I understand that the new effects loop is better too and it can be used at lower volume levels to it's full potential?

True, although ANY FX processor or volume pedal will do the exact same thing to act as a second master volume via the loop.

Thanks for the info!
No thats not me :)

No, I'm not talking about that. There are many effects loops I used that will not work well until you get the amplifier's master volume up to a certain level and sometimes that volume level is much higher than you want to be using.

True again, but you can turn up the master to good levels, then regulate the overall volume using the level/output control on your FX processor or volume pedal.

Yes, that can be done but it's not the same as having a good signal passing through from the beginning. I used to do that with my Intellifex, it was a solution but not the best one.

Unless you can crank the master volume past 9:00, most of the time you will have to compromise optimal tone, for low volume and less than optimal tone (although it seems like power scaling solves the problem nicely).

I had a couple Splawn modded Marshalls and I liked that they still sounded like a Marshall. The only problem I had was with how stiff the amplifier played. I never tried a Quickrod but if he ever incorporated a dial on the back to adjust from stiff to sag, I'd probably bite (not Scott).

Yea, I'm a little scared of that as well. They need a knob like the ones on the back of the PT100...that would be perfect!
