Well... Three weeks into owning my 2005 Splawn QuickRod and I can say that it has supplanted my beloved EVH 5150III as my main amp. I plugged my 5153 in at last nights band practice and quickly went back to the QR. it seems that my tastes in time have made a huge change as of late. While the Splawn doesn't have near the sheer levels of gain that the EVH does, it simply oozes tone. You know you might be onto something when even the drummer says the Splawn sounds killer. I'm still searching for the "right" cab and speaker setup for this amp, but man I just love plugging into this thing.

The right speaker is a Spawn 2x12 or 4x12 with Celestial Creamback 65's. I have 2 of the 2x12's that I use with my Quick Rod and it KILLS!

Splawn is just a great tone. Every soundguy that works with my band or hears it always comments that it sounds great. Built like a tank and just oozes the perfect 80s tone. Still love mine after years of playing it. The tone never gets old

Couldn't agree more!
I run my QR through a 2x12 loaded with M65 Creambacks and it's just awesome!

Congrats on the amp!

You know, First Gear on OD2 will do 80s Rock all day long. But the amp will do so much more. I actually like running it in 3rd gear on OD1 with the gain down low. Tightens up the bottom end a bit. The EVH cab tends to throw too much bass with this head. I'm not sure if it's the speakers or the cab design itself. I'm going to try a friend's Marshall 1960AX cab and see how that works. I may just have to suck it up and buy a Splawn 412. What is the verdict on Small Blocks bs Big Blocks?

Yeah I usually live on G2 OD2, but G3 OD1 can be REALLY nice and chunky. Never tried the Splawn speakers but have heard good things about them.

I traded a Wolfgang two years ago towards this 2005 Splawn QR. I've never looked back since. It has been my amp ever since and many people comments on my tone. I recently purchased the Orange cab and have been pleased with it during band practice but have not gigged with it yet. I've only gigged with the Krank loaded with Eminence Legends and Governors in an x pattern.

Glad you are digging it! When I first got my Quickrod I only had my Marshall 1960a with an x pattern of V30s and G12H30s and it sounded great. I actually wish I had kept that cab cuz it was a bit beat but was solid and sounded really good. Great for humping to gigs and not caring about bumps and bruises.
I did shortly after buy a matching Splawn slant 4x12 with small blocks. It is a great cabinet. Sounds really good as well and is definitely a higher build quality than the Marshall. All that said the tone difference was not huge. I had the amp sounding killer through the Marshall and it's equally killer through the Splawn, but it wasn't like any night and day difference or improvement was had by going to the Splawn. I am glad I did it in the end, but being truthful it wasn't completely necessary.
Probably the biggest take away for you is that I found that mix of speakers worked well. I don't think I would go all V30 and anything in the Greenback family should be killer.

Love my QR's!!! Got my first one in 2006 and then another in 2014.
I have always LOVED the tones. They are keepers.
Don't take them out to gigs much these days, weight and ease of use issues.
Profiled them with my Kemper as well...so I have them in that form as well.

Have used a few different speakers. No Splawn's, yet V30's, vintage 70's Creambacks and Blackbacks, K100's, 25 watt Green Backs, to name a few. Basically sounds great with a variety of speakers. No need to limit yourself.

Enjoy!!!

Did you share out your profiles? Mine are on the Rig Exchange.

Ive had my 06 for 10yrs and it will never be sold. I've bought other amps over the years and currently have been using my EVH stealth head for shows. I won't sell it because I always end up going back to it after awhile. Heck, I'm actually breaking it out for the first time in 6 months for this weekends show. I'm anxious to hear what the guys say in my new band because they've never seen or heard it.

I'll also mention that I ran my '09 QR through a stock Marshall 1960a with the GT75s for one show and I did not like it at all. Too thin and bright.

I love my Pro Stock. Sometimes I fight with it and I can't figure out if it's the speakers or it's so high gain that the louder I turn it up, the less gain I have to use. Takes boosts well, but I want a new boost for it. My Keeley SD-1 feeds-back too much at higher gain.

Still, amazing amp for the dollars spent. Almost bought and Friedman JJ and sold my Helios to keep the Splawn.

This is absolutely true!! Higher volume requires less gain. EVH used to play super loud with less gain and get the KILLER tone
Also, try turning the gain on the pedal way down. It works well to simply push the amp a bit without getting the feedback or whatever.

Splawn rocks
