Thought I would put a thread up and field opinions on the Splawn Street rod.
Anyone on this forum ever played or owned one ?
Likes?
Dislikes ? Let me know.
Splawn makes a 1/12 extension cab for it now,
with another small block speaker in it,
to go with the small block speaker already in the amp.
That should help move some air for sure.
They also are going to make a 2/12 extension cab for it.
Scott actually runs one of these himself.
Basically it's a 40 watt Quickrod in combo form.
Good concept and I am definately interested.

From the clips I've heard of this amp I think it sounds really good. Seems like a great amp for a club gig or for practice.

 No love for the hot little combo from Splawn ?
I was rolling through Splawns website,
and they have a few big name players running Their amps now... ;)
Must be a reason ?

I had one for a few days. Wasn't my thing. It sounded good in the clips and whatnot but it's yet another lesson learned that all the video YouTube clips in the world don't mean squat once i have the amp in my room. Not sure if it was the small block speaker but the whole thing was really harsh sounding to me. YMMV. It did low volumes really well though with the loop trick.

The guy i sold mine to told me he loved it initially, he had a thread on TGP with a Youtube clip and a great review and everything, but a few days later he was selling it.

I guess I can see why some people buy them and are initially put off by them, BUT you have not heard one until you have heard it cranked in a live setting. Best live tone EVER capable of coming out of a Splawn.

That's what I thought when I tried the combo a few weeks ago. Hard to play and harsh on the ears, but I thought it might be perfect in a band.

I'd like to try one out..but there hasn't been a convention in a couple years and they're not easy to come by round these parts

I hear ya on the getting to try it .. I also wish I could try it.
But I feel like I can trust Scott and his guys so I may very well order one.
But I also realize it may not sit with me like I want it.
But I am gonna get one with a 1/12 extension cab right from jump.
This out to help move more air and give me more volume.
Maybe this will help take away some of the combo shock coming down from always running 4/12 cabs. Who knows. :aww:
I know this is the quickrod basically in a 40 watt version.
Most guys say the quickrod is a volume monster,
and if this is true the Street rod version should be awesome.
I hope there is a sweet spot for the best tone,
in the Street rod that is easier to always use,
seeing as this amp is 40 watts versus 100 watts volume wise.
We may very well find out.

if you get one, feel free to route it from my house to yours..just so I can break in those power tubes for ya before you get it....or something....LOL

it should certainly be loud enough

I run my Quickrod in Half Power mode through a 1x12 cab and I can barely even paly it for long for fear of my neighbors, it's LOUD!

Everyone thinks that the Splawns are hard to play (I thought this too before I owned one), and now I couldn't be happier with it. It really improved my playing, and I don't even run it full gain anymore, I've moved down to just playing it on Gear 2 with gain at 1:00, and enjoy the hell out of that tone, it really brings out your playing and dynamics so much more

I talked With Josh at Splawn today,
and we went over the very fact that Splawns are articulate.
They will not hide a mistake in your playing.
There is no comfort for a guy that wants the easy way out running a Splawn.
I like the fact that playing through their amps,
it makes me work harder and be a better player.

Very little clean headroom, other than that loved mine.
You own a street rod or you had one and sold it ?
Explain the very little clean head room thing like I am a 4 year old.

What style of music do you find yourself playing most of the time? If you're playing 80's hair rock the Street Rod would fit you pretty well i think. It just doesn't have a modern voice for heavy detuned stuff, if that's what you're into. I thought it was pretty loud. I had the Street Rod next to a Mesa Electra Dyne and they sounded different but the Mesa has got a lot more balls and punch even though it has less gain. But an OD pedal takes care of that. The Street Rod sounds more like a Marshall though, well a really bright Marshall with lots of biting mids. The Mesa is more of a Marshall/Orange Hybrid with a ton more low end and much smoother mids and highs.

I personally think of Mesa and Splawn like arch enemies... In a weird sense... Or maybe distant nemesis's that only see each other to fight once in a while.

Really? Whenever the Splawn guys went on the offensive it was usually aimed at Cameron or Marshall guys.

Actually, it seems like they're more aimed at Cameron and Mesa. Mesa becuase they're so compressed and get lost in the mix, and Cameron because they're so expensive and Splawn does it better.

 I thought the' biggest '
mind drama ever was the EVH-III versus the Splawn amps.
I look at what I want when I want.
Like Pepper said in the movie the Cowboy way,
' My money goes where I go! You know that ? '

Never heard the EVH (5150?) III, but I would guess it's absolutely nothing like any Splawn... If that's what you were referring to...

Owned one and sold it. The clean channel doesn't have a gain control and breaks up way before you hit band volumes, not a lot of clean head room volume wise even using a 12AT7. Not why I sold it, just the only thing I didn't like about it.
