MURDERATOR
Me and sdmf38 swapped guitars awhile back and I got this squire. Really nice guitar and punches above its weight class. Also this is the first tele I have ever owned or played. I know-crazy right? The stock pups are really good but I was wondering what pup would be good in the neck? Single coil also I might add. To me the strat sound is that neck single coil. Is that the same for a tele? Anyway-just curious as to what you guys think. I want it to be like a Joe Dirt Kentucky Waterfall Mullet....business up front(neck pup) and party in the back( raunchy humbucker)....Thanks!

No, Tele neck pickups are usually darker and lower output than Strats neck PU's. Traditional Tele neck pickups, that is. There are many Tele-looking neck pickups that aim to sound like Strat neck pickups, though. I think Duncan makes one. Not many black covers to choose from, though.

I'm going to throw another suggestion out... why not a full-size hum that can split into a Strat-sounding single coil? Best of both worlds. I'd aim for actives in that case, though. Passive hums that split never quite sounde like actual single coils. But Fishmans and EMG's tend to split better in that regard.

I was always 50/50 on emg's until I got that 24v mod. Really opened them up big time. That's a good idea though...

I kept mine passive and put JB/jazz in it.

So cool on acquiring the Jim Root sig. Tele.

I kinda like the suggestion that D20 made about the SD Jazz/ JB combo.

That’s the set I have in my Sheraton, and that combo just kills.

dude-I hate jb's....with a passion. Every guitar I have owned with a jb just sucked for me. I know-it's crazy...lol...

They sound really nice in this guitar. I’ve never really tried one so I went for it. So far I like them but I thought of getting a distortion also

I'm also tempted to go a totally different direction and get a set of scottosan's newer ones with I believe A2's....That vid he posted made me all tingly in the nethers.....

If you really want to go with a tele neck pickup that gets more strat like and is a little hotter you can try the Twisted Tele neck, as that basically describes what it tries to do. I have a Twisted Tele set in my tele I setup to be more rock oriented.

Traditional tele neck pickups are usually pretty bland sounding. I recently put a Fatpups Freedom ‘55 set in a tele though and am super impressed with how it sounds. The neck pickup sounds great and way sweeter than a normal Tele neck while not being quite as bright or hot as the Twisted Tele. Really kind of what I always wished tele neck pickups sounded like.

If it were me though I’d do like others have said and stay humbucker in the Jim Root. I actually quite like the Jim Root Daemonum EMG’s.
