Never thought I'd actually say that. Maybe it all started with that collab with Acle from Tesseract a while back. LOL. But I've progressed from listening to stuff like Soilwork and Scar Symmetry to Sikth, Periphery and Tesseract. Although for whatever reason I was never into Meshuggah which is what a lot of these guys cite as an influence.

I just really dig the heaviness and the atmospheric texturing. Any other bands of this style that I should check out?

I got into Opeth a while ago. Don't know if I consider them to be "djent" though.

Textures, animals as leaders, Meshuggah (honestly, do it)

would fear factory be one of the early djent bands?... I know Meshuggah is pretty much the blueprint..

not Djent, but I would suggest Strapping Young lad or Devin Townsend... a lot of heaviness and textures I am sure the mentioned bands were influenced by..

I'll give those a listen. Any Meshuggah album you recommend in particular?

IMO..Chaosphere, Catch Thirty Three, Destroy Erase Improve, Obzen.. probably in that order.

Another vote for Textures as well, their stuff is excellent, and quite under appreciated.

Goofiness of the need for a new sub-genre label aside, of course :)

It depends, Meshuggah is so diverse in their sound, yet they always sound like Meshuggah to me. You said you didn't like them, what did you hear so far and why didn't you like it?

some cool suggestions, i think Animals as leaders is probably one of the best releases in that style, great varied album from start to finish

otherwise check these bands/albums out:

After the burial - Rareform (reissue)
Veil of maya - the common man's collapse
Born of osiris - a higher place

although they might fit more into the tech category

for me, Chaosphere was the 'loosest' in terms of riffs or 'riff structure,' if that makes any sense--it just didn't seem very 'driving' to me. Catch Thirty Three is cool but can be tough for a newcomer to get into because it's not really broken into actual songs.

Obzen i think is awesome. i like Nothing too, and Destroy Erase Improve is their classic.

also i definitely second the Animals as Leaders recommendation--great record.

It could just be that I haven't listened to them in a long time. I can't remember what I heard which is why I'm definitely open to giving them another listen. I remember coming away not really feeling the need to listen to them again. But then again "djent" in general didn't draw me in either back then.

Ok. Start by giving Destroy Erase Improve a spin, it's pretty straightforward in your face metal, nothing too out there. After that if you want more, hit up "I" and their newest album ObZen. Then if you want to see how "out there" they go, listen to Nothing, and Catch 33.

If you make it to "I" make sure you get the single track version, it makes more sense than the versions that are split up into multiple tracks.

Animals as Leaders gets my vote as well. I like them because they are instrumental, are any of the others ?

This is a sure sign that you no longer or never had good taste in music.

I'm into the heavy Meshuggah-inspired bands, but I can't stand this new "core" influence stuff that's getting popular. Periphery, Circle of Contempt, Tesseract, etc. On paper it seems like something down my alley, but I have yet to hear one band do it right.
