That sounds awesome! I am envious.

So how good are the cleans? Still have not found a high gain metal amp that has the cleans I want.

Cleans are great!
The second channel without boost engaged sounds like a great SRV tone too!
The clean/CLEAN channel one stays pretty clean all the way up but you can set the gain high and get a little spank from it. It's a cool slight mid scooped clean, much like Fenders.
Whereas the Bogners have a very Marshally clean tone... in my opinion.

Sounds good, man.
Love those SRV tones, too.
I have heard the Bogner XTCs are a bit, uh, spotty on cleans. The Shiva I played sounded great, though.
I suppose it makes a big difference which powertubes are in the XTCs though.

yES...The Bogner Xtcy is lacking in the cleans for sure!
No sparkle either.

Olaf,

The Dino - after a few sessions with it, A/B'ing with the and a few others... was VERY heavy (industrial) sounding. I can see why a group like Iced Earth would use the Dino. The notes fly off the fretboard almost before you hit the pick! Very fast tight direct sound.
The Steavens Poundcake is almost as tight but not quite... and has a larger tone- more broad/wider...
The Dino is like a bullet searing thru the air, whereas the Steavens is like a huge hail storm. lol...
Very nice amp to have as it's got more gain than the Bogner and 4 channels and much more aggressive than any Bogner!!
I'm enjoying it!
Keith

Hey Keith,

can you compare Steavens, Bogner 100B and Dino of Mike to his creation- Bones? I know Stevanes tone very well... but heard Mike's Bones only at his site. Thanks in advance.

Hey there, picassochild!!

The Bogner 100B is VERY vintage sounding, not at all tight or aggressive. The Steavens is more in the direction of tight and aggressive while retaining the low mid grind.
If I were looking for the "Larry Dino / Steavens" tone I would look NO further than the Fortin Bones as Mike has owned EVERY ONE of these amps we speak of and will tailor the tone EXACTLY to what you need!
Fortin Amplification is brand new but once a few people get their hands on these amps, Mike will have problems keeping up with demands. I have owned Wizards, Bogners, tons of old Marshalls etc etc etc and this guy has an incredible ear PLUS the technical ability to get what he hears into a working amplifier! He uses the best components available and is very precise in his work!
The other major plus about Mikey is that he is an amazing guitar player. That means a ton when you are trying to explain feel and tone to him as a builder. He "gets" it - he understands what we want and need!
Ya... so, I will buy an amp from Mike very soon!

Any other questions, picassochild, just ask me!

I've tried all those amps too. Since you're most familiar with Steavens I'll compare the Fortin Bones to it. Both are quite tight but the Fortin is more Bold or solid feeling (more headroom), if you will. It has more midrange responce and a more vocal, singing quality to single note soloing. The highs are more defined than the Steavens but still has a creamy, liquid quality thats not harsh and makes playing easy.

I can honestly say the Bones is the most versatile single channel amplifier I've experienced.

If you're really into the low-mid oriented, late 90's modern rock tone then the Steavens covers that area better, though at the cost of some clarity. All 4 channels of the Steavens share a particular low mid focus. The Fortin is plenty thick just not as low mid oriented.

You can get some considerably tight and chunkin' hard rock/metal tones out of the Bones. But it is not as outright metal oriented as the Dino. However there is an upcoming Fortin amp that will be

I like Bogners but I don't think they're in the same league as Steavens, Larry and Fortin.

was gonna make a post about a week or so ago on the Steaven amps after hearing the clips on youtube. it does sound sweet for sure.

it looks like it's built like a tank!
do they sound good? for the mobey would hope so.

So what happened to the Poundcake. Still digging it?

I am having some Steavens GAS these days

Keith still has the PoundCake I sold to him.

I hope the next time Bernhard comes for a visit to Canada that he'll bring a Blackbird or at least a PC100mk3 for me

If you are having troubles contacting him, send me a PM. I might be able to help.
He's a busy dude and works a full time day job that requires extensive traveling/overtime on top of Steavens amps.

Cheers,
Mike

Hmm, you think the PC100 is much much better than the PC50?

Man there are almost no clips anywhere about these. I'm not interested in the Blackbird, too many knobs, I prefer the PC design.

I have a thing for amp knobs :scared:

I think the 50w is just as excellent sounding as the 100w. The 50w is 3 channels and the 100w is 4 channels. BTW the Blackbird is the PC with tone controls for each channel as per Bernhard.

Every time I speak to Bern on the phone, I also tell him he should do more clips. I need to follow my own advice about some Meathead clips...  working on it

Mike

Oh really? I couldn't have guessed LOL

Well I have 2manyknobs on my Triamp already, it really gets in the way if you have just 5 min to set up and get ready on festival gigs. I am much quicker setting up the XTC for example. So as the Steavens has a similar feature set as the Bogner, I have hopes the Steavens could be a "one does all" solution but with a bit of a tighter and more upper mid punch as well as great string separation.

Only clip I can find that gives an idea is this YT of the PC50 (which sounds quite good tbh): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2yKrxmFGMw

I thought maybe the OP or someone have some more material to share.

I wish I had some clips for you but from my experience with that amp, it easily does what you describe above

Mike, you rule, after 27 emails back and forth, I know everything you knew about Steavens amps. Well my Poundcake 100 Mk3 is on the way as you know, can't wait to get it in!!

Haha, a good one, I just found a Youtube clip with an actual Steavens Poundcake in it, I think it sounds amazing, although the player is just 6th grade!!!

Hey CJ,
Glad I could help out  Bernhard is a good friend and makes an outstanding product.

You'll have to post some pics and clips after you get yours.

BTW, I love the name of that band, FIST
In my high school hair band, I wanted to call our band "Your Sister's C**t" but I got out voted  :scared:   but FIST is awesome

Cheers,
Mike
