Well, for one thing, i live literally 5 min from Steve's house/studio, and i know him because we go to the same neighbor's coffee shop, where i met him while we were standing in line and...asked him for a record deal, witch he gave me!! ( He set me up with his people from his record label, witch did check my stuff/guitar playing and sign me/released one of my cd's ) But technically, it was a connection via Satriani/Cliff from Destroy all Guitars, Satriani was using the MEZZABARBA amps and Steve wanted to check them out as well. I ended up spending extra time with Steve, talking about Spiritual stuff ( Universe-Meditation ) and i asked for advice for my musical career, witch he gave me.

WThat's a cool story, congrats.

I heard he’s giving up Amplification. Going full acoustic going forward.

I could never see Vai leaving Ibanez.
I don't think he'll ever leave Ibanez. I was just thinking if Dave is making a throwback Via guitar maybe he's got something else on the back burner. He said something on the lines of "no comment" when asked about Via and amps on ToneTalk webcast.

It has to be some big brand that can provide him amps and cabs world wide. Even with Carvin he had to use Marshall at some gigs.

On Ibanez:
I doubt Steve would ever leave Ibanez. They're not only a huge company with quite the bankroll to maintain a cat like Vai, but the design of his guitars is almost part and parcel to much of what Ibanez stands for today. So - I think they're separated at the hip, er, head...whatever. He'll stick with Ibanez.

On Amplification and being "business savvy":

Carvin and Vai had less to do with a business savvy decision than it was chance. If you delve into Steve's earlier years, there's a great bit of history he speaks of with regards to getting the Carvin catalogues back in the day; responding to magazine ads for sponsorships, record deals, gigs, bands, etc. Carvin was one of the earliest to support Steve with some free gear. After he proved what he was capable of talent-wise, the floodgates opened up bigtime, and he was using all kinds of gear. Sometime later in the 90s, Carvin and him reunited to work on the Legacy lineup of amps specific to Steve. As per his testimony (truncated for purposes of this post) "Carvin was the only company that wanted to build me what I wanted, as opposed to tell me what they wanted to see me play. Everyone was super cool back then, everyone was doing their best to get their gear and names on the set, but Carvin said 'tell us what you need the amp to do and we'll make it happen', and they did so perfectly. They're a family business, and they offered me a spot in the family from day one - unconditionally - and I'll never forget that".

On the dude that got to meet Vai and hang out with him, have coffee, talk spirituality, get a record deal, live as neighbours:
Welcome to the board, Steve's a great guy, let us know what band you're in so we can hear some of your tunes Good Sir!!

And that's all I've got.

Maybe Ibanez will make a clone of the original Legacy

Maybe Ibanez since they have a long relationship with him business wise will end up doing what he wants. If he dicides to do something with more construction quality and killer amp tones as his trademark . David Friedman is the Guy for that Job

I'm not sure Ibanez is capable of this...from an "amp manufacturing" point of view. I think they sub-contract their amps out to other manufacturers and just stick their badge on them. Guitars - totally different story - but for amps, I don't think Ibanez would dare step foot into those waters.

Vai will make his own choice, and will still likely be climbing on stage with a backline of Carvins for years to come. Just cuz the company's pooched doesn't mean their wares suddenly evaporate worldwide...the amps will still work for quite some time.
