Straps and Straplocks...

Less stress on the screw holes since the lock is actually over the button and not an extension of the button.
I've done more repairs on Dunlop equipped guitars, and never had a single Schaller loosen up on me...

I like the schallers on mine. For those that are putting a smaller screw into a bigger hole, just grab a wooden toothpick, bust into 2-3 pieces, stick it in the hole and screw in your straplock....no need to get too creative with the whole dowel issue. If you are worried about it, toss a dab of wood glue in there too, but I have never seen one fail with the toothpick and no glue either. They are more apt to fail via the locking mechanism than the actual strap button coming out of the guitar....

Call me crazy, call me what you will... But I would never do a thing to my vintage lp, such as remove a large screw and replace it, may sound crazy but it won't sit like it did from the factory. The vibration will differ as little as it may be from what it was. I'm just to into the tone of my geet to fk with it like that.

You can always choose your strap material to offset any tonal fluctuations caused by changing screws.

Funny, the only time I've ever damaged a guitar was when when my Schaller straplock broke on my old Ibanez while doing the behind the back throw. The metal in the little "cup" area actually broke and the guitar went flying. The neck was destroyed; headstock off completely, frets mangled, and fretboard totally cracked from 2-9 or so...

Granted, that's the only time I've ever heard of them breaking, and have never experienced it since. Then again, I kind of stopped doing the guitar throw thing right around the same time. Thankfully it was a cheap-ass guitar.

I remember the circle (nut?) would get loose over time as well... hm...

I like just using my Lock-It brand straps with the lock built-in. Very convenient!

They do work well. I just have one. I probably would have gone that way, had I not already had most of my guitars fitted with Schallers.

The only thing I don't like about the shallers is that the nut does loosen over time.

I use a socket (no ratchet) to hand-tighten the Schaller nut. Usually after a few days of re-snugging, once the strap end has totally compressed, I don't seem to have them getting loose again over time. I suppose one could try LocTite, too... Thought about it before, but haven't actually done it.

I tell everyone to get Schaller straplocks, or, if on a budget get oversized buttons.

I was a devout user of Dunlop Straplocks until I discovered Dimarzio clip-lock straps. Every one works with the original screws from any guitar (Ibanez, Les Paul, Strat, etc.) and are economical and easily interchangeable. The only issue/recommendation I have is that if you're going to put one on a Les Paul, go with the 3" version (which are harder to find) than the 2" version. I have the 3" on my VOS '58 and '59 Les Pauls and they're great, comfortable, and easy to use, plus the interchangeability factor.

Downside is that the clip end on the guitar is long and may mess with the fit of your case if you have a tight-fit case.

Lock-It Straps: That looks pretty cool... but is it a bitch to put (like a regular strap) or is it a bit bigger then you "lock" it in place? That's one of the reasons I love the Planet Waves locking strap... it's over sized then you twist to lock it down... works very well, I just wish they would make them out of metal instead of cheap plastic.

Dimarzio Cliplock Straps: Is is just a strap-on (huh, huh) or does it lock on the screw end? How do they stay "locked"?

Depends on the strap locks and the stock hardware. My son just picked up a Jackson RR5, and he was going to re-use the stock screws with the Dunlop posts: The head of the screw was too big to fit inside of the post.

Depends on the strap locks and the stock hardware. My son just picked up a Jackson RR5, and he was going to re-use the stock screws with the Dunlop posts: The head of the screw was too big to fit inside of the post.

One end stays attached to the guitar, it attaches to the strap with a plastic clip lock.. The end that stays on the guitar is the "female" end and the end that stays on the strap is the "male" end. You just squeeze to release the strap. Works great, but can be a tight fit in the case since one end stays attached. I have both but prefer the Schaller's. Here is the info from MF.

Aaaaaaahhhhhhh I see...

You still need to screw some sort of clip on to the guitar... that sucks! If you do this then you're pretty much "stuck" with this system... same thing the Schaller's (I've had them in the past)... Man, I just wish Planet Waves would come up with a metal version of this with padding...

This is what it looks like on a guitar...

The older model IMO was much better because you could twist the ends in any direction and it was much easy because the button was more accessible to "unlock" it... and it looked cooler...

+1 Done the toothpick trick with glue many,many times and it always works.
