Hey Guys..
I am considering building a strat that I want with the features I want.
Here's the thing. I've never setup a strat with a Floyd that sits on the body
or that doesn't float. I should say I've never put one together. I've had them
in a Peavey Wolfgang and it worked great and helped with sustain I thought.

Anyway, I can buy a used body for sure from Ebay from an old Jackson or maybe
even a Charvel, etc,. What do you have to look out for in buying a neck? I mean, I'm
wanting a guitar with the old Charvel sand dimas type necks, and I am thinking I'll either
use Warmoth or USA custom guitars for the neck as I want stainless medium jumbo
tall frets, a symetrical EVH neck profile, etc,. and this would be the perfect guitar for me. I'll
use a new Floyd or if possible I might use an Ibanez Edge as I really like those better than the
real floyds. Does the height of the floyd resting against the body require the neck pocket to be
different or should this difference be in the neck ? Where does this happen typically? Why does it matter?
Thanks so much. in advance. You folks rock!
Tim

Keep in mind that Charvels and maybe Jacksons traditionally used wider necks. Musikraft makes replacements with that heel width, and you can always use the narrower Fender necks if you don't mind the gap on the sides.

Strats with non-recessed Floyds typically have angled neck pockets because the Floyd sits higher on the body than the standard trem. I think the Edge sits even higher. You can just shim a straight pocket if you wanted.

Thanks Cardinal. I wondered about the width of the charvels. I might be better off to buy a used one, but I want that EVH Peavey Wolfgang neck feel, and the looks and functionality of the Charvel, etc, with a floyd that rests on the body and only dives, etc,. I read you shouldn't shim a neck or it will cause a hump in the same? Thanks so much for the reply..

Eh, you can shim the full length of the neck pocket, which shouldn't cause a hump any more than would be caused by the act of bolting the neck to the body. Personally, I do this with layers of masking tape (carefully building more layers that taper to the back edge of the neck; makes for a pretty smooth transition), but others will use pieces of wood veneers, etc. that are completely smooth.

Thanks Cardinal. I found out you can buy the body with the angle already cut out correctly.. I thought I'd shave the neck pocket a little to get the angle.. But, you'd have to be careful or you'd mess up the height of it, but I"d rather mess that up than the body I'm thinking, but maybe not.. I'll figure it out.. :-)
