I would only go with a 5 way. the 2 and 4 positions are my favorites! YMMV.

If I'm playing rock 1 and 5 are basically all I use. But if I'm getting into clean tones 2, 3, 4 are where it's at.

2 & 4 without a doubt for clean, but give 3 a try with some dirt. I never used 3 at all until I watched a Robin Trower instructional video...its basically the only setting he uses...sounds pretty cool in the context of heavier blues/rock.

I have a Mex Strat & love 2 & 4! I have an Yngwie that is a 3way; at first I was a bit bummed, but eventually couldn't care less- the middle pickup sounds killer & delivers all those clean/dirty rhythm tones I love. Not a lot of experience with other pickups, but this one slays, I think it's a Dimarzzio (09 model)

Position 2 for cleans! Yummy!
No doubt...I think Mark Knopfler really put that tone on the map with Sultans of Swing.

Favorite pick up choices?
Rio Grande Muy Grande set. I also really like Duncan Quarter Pound and APII's.

I had an American Deluxe Strat with the S-1, and while it was fun to play around with the tone knobs on 10 different pickup combinations, it is somewhat unnecessary. I've read that the American Deluxe Tele with S-1 can cover ALL of the sonic ground of a typical SSS Strat, however. With that said, I think the modern 5-way switch is the perfect balance. Variety is the spice of life after all, even if I primarily use the 1st and 4th positions. I like the jangle of the middle and bridge pups together, more than just the bridge alone. If I played out, I would use the bridge since it's the best if you want to really cut through IMO.
