I have a Les Paul Custom into a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier rev f. The guitar has the original pickups. Looking for something hotter, with good clarity through all the strings, good low end but cleans up well too. Any suggestions?

I have an Aldrich in my custom. It sounds good, but it compresses a little more than I like. The Suhr Thornbucker+ in my R8 sounds a lot better and the output, while lower, is fine. I had the Het set in a Mayones Duvell. Didn’t really like them all that much so swapped them back for passives

The Aldrich will be your best choice. They sound great in an LP.

I have a set of Aldrich pickups in my '03 LP standard LE, they sound great. The neck sounds very nice with gain, which in my book is rare. They also split well if you are into that. In my '73 LP custom I had the thornbuckers and love those as well, that guitar growls on its own, so I found the Aldrich pickups too hot to my tastes.

The Hetfields, while fatter and chunkier than the standard 81/60, still have the typical EMG low-end rolloff compared to passives. So if you're looking for "good low end" where "good" means "abundant", look elsewhere.

They're also hotter than the 81/60 set, so I'm not sure they clean up all that well either.

I like them, but to me, they're more like the 81/60 set on steroids, not like a more "refined" alternative in the EMG realm.

The Aldrich and Hetfield pickups are two different animals so hard to make a solid choice IMO. I had an Aldrich in a LP Standard I had years ago and actually cleaned up great, especially for how hot they are. They are hot pickups but not irritatingly hot like some pickups are. They still remain articulate and defined and cover a lot of bases.
