I had a Suhr Aldrich bridge pickup a few months ago in my Les Paul. I didn't really care for it, as I thought it was just too much. Too much of everything. The pickup didn't seem to clean up very well, and was a bit bottm heavy for my liking. With that said, every time I see a clip of Dough, I want to buy another Suhr Aldrich pickup. I'm temped to bite the bullet and buy another one in hopes that I may like the pickup this time... but on the other hand this seems like a waste of money.... what do you think?

I've been wanting to try that pickup. I put a screamin demon in my charvel and its actually pretty cool, gonna try a JB next, but Im really wanting to try the Aldrich.

You want to trade?

Man I love the Aldrich!
But then again....I lean towards more Metal...
it replaced my Afwayu which had a tad too much low end.
Great voice and bite in the Aldrich.
Just my opinion.... ;)

Have you tried the WCR Godwood? They're about perfect in my book. Very well balanced.

You had it first hand and ejected it, stop thinking so much

I have one in my LPC, and it sounds great. Not too heavy or anything, then again I installed it myself and don't know what I am doing. It is quite possible I did something wrong and am not getting the full output. It does, however sound good, so I am leaving it.  It now sort of matches the neck pickup in power and is a bit fuller than the original pickup. The original lead pickup was pretty bright and always seemed quite a bit lower output than the neck. MY LPC is has 3 humbuckers, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

If you were thinking about trying it out again in the same guitar then that sounds like a waste of money to me. Try some of the other favorites that the other rig-talkers like, such as the WCR godwood / icebucker / darkburst or a bareknuckle coldsweat or some of the MotorCity stuff, or a duncan custom/JB. FWIW I've got a 2nd deg. Blackbelt in my LesPaul and its the shit... rock to chug-chug metal no problem.

I did the same thing with the Duncan Screaming Demon. Just didn't care for it, except I was foolish enough to buy it twice. Don't bother. Try something else.

Sounds great in a les paul too me. Im looking too put one in my backup paulpaul

Even though I love the Aldrich in my Les Pauls, I would try another pickup.

I have an Aldrich in the bridge of my '04 LP standard LE and '73 LP custom. I love the clarity of the Aldrich, doesn't seem to bass heavy to me at all. It also splits really well, which I have the option of doing in both guitars. So if its too hot and thick for the song, I just run it split. I have thought about going with a more vintage set for my '73 LP custom, but that is just usually GAS and not leaving well enough alone.

I would like to try the WCR Godwood, from the clips it seems more crunchy than the Aldrich, more similar to the crunch I got with the Rio Grande BBQ I used to have in the '73 LP custom bridge.

The Rio Grande BBQ is a great pickup in a Les Paul. I have a Suhr Aldrich in mine and love it but I'd go to the BBQ if I ever got sick of the SA.

I found the BBQ too thick and crunchy in my '73 LP custom, but that guitar is already thick and mean sounding naturally. I liked the BBQ alot better in my '95 LP studio I used to have....

The Aldrich was sorta meh... good, but not amazing.

Try the new Fender EVH Sig pickup. Same one in the Wolfgang. It does everthing the Aldrich does, has plenty of hot output, harmonics galore and also sounds great in a LP. Just ask Pete Thorn.

I have a '73 les paul custom that had a BK nailbomb set and a MC afwayu/2nd degree BB (those sets seem to be the most recommended Suhr Aldrich alternatives on this forum)
the nailbomb sounded pretty good, but didn't have enough mids for my tastes
the afwayu sounded similar, but a lot middier
I was happy with it for a long time, at near standard tunings, but now my band is playing mostly in Drop C, and the afwayu was getting too muffled and bass heavy on the low strings rhythms
my bandmate's cheap cort guitar with a miracle man set was kicking my ass

I just replaced the MCP set with the BK cold sweat set I took from another guitar
didn't try it loud yet, but sounded like a good move
midrange is more controlled and more uppermid centered and the top end has a nicer and stronger sparkle
low end is still very chunky, but tighter
didn't want to follow the obvious John Sykes path, but it really works

if you wanna go low output, the Riff Raff or the VHII are a great options

I have the Suhr in a Les Paul standard. It's not means bass heavy at all. Way better tahn the Duncan JB. That would be about 5th on my list for a replacement. I'd put a 498T in it before I'd put the JB in there.

I think I'm going to go with a Suhr SSH+. I had a DSH+ in the guitar about a year ago, and really like the pickup 99%. It was just a tad too dark. I'm thinking that the single row of screws on the SSH will be brighter than the double row of the DSH. If so, I will have found my pickup. I loved the mids on the DSH, just was wanting a bit more top end. According to the Suhr website, this should be what I get from the SSH+. I'll let you guys know once I have it in and installed.

Based on this convo, and the suhr guitars I have picked up, and the suhr pedals Ive used, Suhr pickups might be the next move for me. Dark is what I want and I was lookin at the DSH+ for a bit
