I'm looking to pick up a Suhr Modern Pro on trade for my Petrucci BFR. The Suhr has that cool flamed denim finish that I have always dug, along with a maple neck, Gohoto 510 bridge, H-H stock pickups. The recent buy-out of Suhr has hastened my drive to get a "pre-corporate" modern (if that even means anything).

My concern is the neck profile as I've been getting into thicker necks as of late, getting away from the Ibanez prestige profile, hence me selling the BFR. What is this "modern elliptical neck" profile similar to. The shape of my Davies/Washburn N4 feels perfect. How does the Suhr compare?

Also, is a straight up trade fair? As I've seen a wide range in used prices for this model Suhr. Apparently this one is in excellent/perfect condition.

I wouldn't worry about the corporate buyout...

I think it's a fair trade and a better guitar IMO. I believe the Pro's come with the .800-.850 carve, which is just perfect for me. I also sold my JP's because I grew tired of the ultra thin neck carve. The Suhr is thin as well, but still feels more substantial to me. I know a lot of Suhrs use to come with the .780-.830 carve, but Suhr noticed the popularity of the Guthrie Govan .800-.850 and now most of their guitars come with it nowadays. All of my Moderns have the .800-.850 carve, but with either a 14" or 16" straight radius...just my preference. Many like the 10”-14” compound though. As far as comparing it to other neck carves, I really can't say? Hopefully, you dig it. After getting my first Suhr, my JP's (and Ibanezs for that matter) were history...never looked back.

The modern pro that I played felt more like a beefier ibanez profile where the beef was more in the middle. Definitely not a modern C style like ESP or Jacksons. Chording wasnt as comfortable as say a fender, but it felt comfortable regardless. I liked it :)

If you are into a chunkier carve you might be disappointed but they are great guitars. The even "C" slim carve is much beefier than the Guthrie carve for reference. That sounds like a good trade though.

That description is promising and is the main issue I have with the Ibanez/JP necks. They need more in the middle of the neck. Thanks for the response.

Moderns comecwith only an eliptical neck shape. These come in three sizes. Once i got a Suhr i sold my BFR. It was no contest

Hmmm. The website states only a modern elliptical profile with a 10-14'' radius, doesn't say it they come in more than 1 carve. I'll have to see if the guy has the specific spec sheet for this specific guitar.

When i custom ordered mine there was three to choise from. Maybe the Pro models only come in one

Yeah, this is true for custom orders. The production Moderns have I believe a standard carve, but they may have changed the standard carve over the past 6 years, not sure.

You have a blue production Modern correct? How does it compare to the N4 and the JP neck profile in thickness?

If this helps, I have owned 2 EBMM JP guitars and now Have 2 Suhrs. One is a modern with elliptical neck and 16 inch radius, the other is a custom t with D shaped neck and 16 inch radius. The modern elliptical neck is much busier than what comes on on Ernie Ball. Keep in mind my JP models are from the 2006 2007 era, but I don't think that the net profiles have changed much.

The Suhrs are thicker but still pla The modern elliptical neck is much busier than what comes on on Ernie Ball. Keep in mind my JP models are from the 2006 2007 era, but I don't think that the net profiles have changed much. The Suhrs are thicker but still play fast and feel amazing!

Sounds like the Suhr may work for me.

P.S. I'm assuming you meant bigger, not busier :D

My blue Modern is a custom model. The neck is bigger on the Suhr but still shreddy there is no comparison for me. EBMM are nicer guitars. Suhrs are top of the heap for me

Here are the sellers pics, everything look legit? Are there even good copies of Suhrs out there?

I have 2 Moderns. When I ordered mine, there were 2 thicknesses. I guess this was just before the Guthrie came out and they added the 3rd option? I have the thinner and the thicker necks on mine both with 16" radius. The thinner one is similar to an Ibanez but just not as flat through the middle. The thicker one feels rounder, not necessarily bigger. It's a step closer to a Les Paul but still 2 steps from that.

I should also say I had 3 Petrucci's that I sold to get my Suhrs and the JP neck is smaller. Almost too small and I have small hands. Both great guitars but for me, Suhr just fits better overall.

Just played it. It's nice for the limited time I had with it. I liked the neck. Thicker than my Ibbys, not as thick as the N4. Very similar to my Charvel Custom shop but slightly thicker. I dug the Gotoh 510 bridge, and I'm a Floyd guy. I'm going to let him play it for a song or two as he has a local gig coming up in a week. Seems like he's on the fence.

Suhr's ship in a soft case!!! Why in the hell would an expensive guitar like this ever leave the
factory in anything but a high quality well fitting hard case?!?!?

I agree about the case. That just baffles me.
