Not that I'm a fan of the doughnut-boy, but I kinda like his lead tone and want to try something different than humbuckers for a change. Got some Suhr FL/ML and one V60LP around somewhere that I'm thinking of installing in a strat. How do these compare with the low output Dimarzio HS-3 and HS-4 tone- and output-wise? Not really considering the SD YJM, I liked the Dimarzios better in some comparisons videos I've seen.

I would not base your judgment off of the videos. I am not a Dimarzio pup fan. Those HS-3, YJM's etc. all make your tone go downhill. Look at the video with YJM talking about his SD pups. I have not tried his SD Fury pups, but SD does a good job with stacked S-C pups.

I am a DiMarzio fan, but I couldn't agree more. Those pickups are the worst I have ever used. Went in and came out the same day. Awful, just God Awful!

What were so bad about them, besides the very low output?

I like middle & neck pu a lot in my 09 Yngwie Strat! Great tones, the "low output" complaint is not that big a deal, I don't expect them to keep up with EMGs-just compensate in other areas of the chain. A big part of the tonesis that brass nut, very unique sounding

Really thin sounding. It wasn't the low output, which I actually prefer, seemed to have a VERY LIMITED EQ range. As said above, sucked the tone right out of the guitar.

I'm a fan of the Area series and Virtual Vintage series, not sure that's what you're looking for, but much more well-rounded pickups (IMO). Hell, if I can find my HS-3 - I'll ship it to you.

Never palyed the HS-3 , but I had an HS-2 in an old strat and it was a great pickup. Good enough for Eric Johnson....good enough for me!

I'll take you up on that offer

I think Yngwie's rhythm tone is pretty bad, I'd use it almost exclusively for leads
The pickups seems to have a pretty balanced EQ...
Maybe pickup height or tone control (read that he disconnects his tone control from the signal) have something to do with it

Good tone is in each individual's ear. Only reporting how I felt about it. Certainly can't argue with Eric Johnson or Malmsteen's tone. I'll see if I still have it in my pickups bin.

Found it.

First, I was wrong about what I had tried; this is the HS-4 (DP217). Second, I don't have a cover for it. Finally, if you want it, PM me your address. I can ship it out Monday or Tuesday USPS.

You tha man

Better in your guitar than in my Rubbermaid full of pickups. Especially, if you can enjoy it. I would like to know how you like it once you try it out. Post back up in here, I'm REALLY interested in your opinion.
