Most people that say that don't even play in lower tunings much at all. If you want a brighter sound, then yeah, go for some brighter woods, but mahogany sounds by far the best in low tunings IMO and a ton of the best low tuned guitar tones have been recorded with mahogany guitars.
hey everyone has what they like, i was just saying what i prefer. i had a maple BODIED strat, it was ok in standard but you put in drop c or lower and it came alive, where as my prs (normally what the kids like to drop tune) just kinda got lost live when we played a dream theater tune that was tuned to c standard. im just talking my experince with my hands, amps etc. its all preference yo
A Wood
Mahoganey is my favorite tone wood, I'm to the point where i won't take a chance on an Alder or Swamp Ash guitar. My Gibson Explorer sounds tight tuned down, i never really go below C#. If things get mushy i would just play around with my amps settings. I have really grown to dislike bright sounding guitars. Alder and Swamp Ash don't work for me.
Interesting note though. I owned a banged up Kramer which was solid Maple and it was a LOT warmer than the Alder Charvel i owned. The Kramer was really a parts guitar and it was never really setup that great so i sold it. But it sounded better than most any Alder or Swamp Ash guitar i owned. It cost me around $450 and tonewise it smoked a $2400 Suhr i once owned.
