Which proves that the cab is the biggest part of the tone. Just like that high-gain shootout a while ago. They all sounded basically the same to me. Sure, some subtle differences, but the cab is the main tone-shaping.
I always said that. Why do you think I'm very specific with my cab/speaker/mic set-up. Now that said, once upon a time I clone my recording set-up and I do prefer that to any other impulse I have yet tried.

As a side note when I was messing with this today I was surpised by the inherent midrange that the Axe JMP sims (all of them) have as compared to the real deal and the other models. The Axe sims sound like I expect to hear, and but it does have more of a lower mid than the others or the JMP. Not that I can't change that, just vamping about inherent stuff I heard on 9.02.

I am hearing differences, maybe cause I am trying to key in on the basic "modeler" tell tails but I have found out lately that it is getting harder by the year. I listen for low end and differences in held notes and how they hang and it is not so easy as it was.

Overall agreed damn close but I do hear differences. I do know I want an axefx still.

To me there are differences but not enough to care other than the lack of gain on clip 4.

I always just pick what sounds best to my ears.

Hell if it's something I don't currently have, I want to know about it.

Did you try Plexi 2? Plexi 1 has tons of low mids, by design (it's supposed to give that "Everybody Wants Some" tone when you crank the Master). Plexi 2 should sound very similar to the others, and, in my tests, does. In fact Plexi 2 sounds very similar to 11R's Plexi model except that it has a little more complexity and blooms as you hold the note. But if you just whack a chord it sounds very similar.

I used Plexi 2 and tried the the others as well. Actually the closest I get is Plexi2 with the Wrecker tone stack.

Woah.

We need Mentoneman to dig into PLexi 2 and get his VH on.

Was there any consensus on what people were digging on the various forums?

The Axe and 11r seemed to be getting the love here.

3 is the fave. Most folks on other places hated 1, and only one guy got any of them right.

The thing that is weird to me is that the clips with verb all have the same amount verb off a UAD 2 Plate and react completely different to it.

Interesting.

I think peoples impressions are probably going to shift depending on what section of the clip they're keying in on.

I don't see liking 3 and HATING one, but everyone has different ears :D

Thanks for putting this up.

I just need to sell some of the stuff I do not use much and get a Axe Fx. I have known this for some time ... I was hoping the price of used would come down or I would win the lottery or what ever.

Cliff ~ is there anything new in the works coming out that I should know about ? Where is this whole thing heading ? Whats next ?

I very much need a new computer ..... so the software version would be a consideration. I believe in doing things right the first time and want to make the right decision.

..... and Ed thank for doing this. I trust your ears more than most.

This is the Plexi 1 with the Master, Mid, Treble and Presence pegged into the T75 cab:

I isolated the right track from the recording which has no guitar except the screeches and dive-bombs and stuff.

2 is the marshall. i think i like it most, followed by 3's solo tone. the dirt on the end of the clip/rhythm of 3 i dont like though.

4 sounded almost muffed-like, didnt like it too much. and 4 had a huge volume drop when you went to clean - not sure if that was a patch change or what.

this should be interesting

edit: hell yeah i got it right. interesting i liked the axe-fx 2nd best - but still not as good as the real deal though

I got #3 and #4 right. #4 was easy since the gain was too low and that's the biggest problem with soft modelers since there's really no way to trim the input accurately.

I think you're in the minority based on the responses. I don't think anybody here picked 2, did they?

i noticed the marshall character right away in the first 3 seconds of each clip.

marshalls you cant hide behind - no matter how much you juice them - the clean character will always be there when you hear the click of the pick on the strings. the tone also sounds layered - it sounds like SS grind ontop of clean. and not a modeled tone of gain and sustain which is less harsh.

a modded SL is a different story though

the longer each clip played the more i knew which one was which - but i dont have any experience with modelers to tell the difference between them.

the axe's solo tone sounded nice and smoothe though. i was surprised i liked it 2nd best right off the bat. but 2 sounded like it was getting ready to hit a nice fat harmonic when ed did the bend in the clip. that was the 100% killer
