Surprised that a V30 and T75 combo sounds scooped...

Picked up an unloaded diagonal 2x12 (Marshall 1966B) and put in a Celestion V30 and a G12T-75. Put the V30 up top and the T75 on the bottom. Neither seems broken in, but I'm surprised that the cabinet sounds so scooped. Was not expecting that. Good "thunk" and chug on palm mutes, but not sure it's what I was hoping for.

Would swapping out the T75 for an H30 give the same basic sound but a bit thicker in the mids?

Cab was intended to be used with a Triple Recto. I have another cab (Marshall 1965B) that I adore for good rock/hard rock tones, and was hoping to put together a "metal" cab that matched the 1965B.

Thanks!

Move the pickups down on the low E side some and try to EQ it cranked abit, it should be thick and full sounding but not bass dominate .
The mids will sound scooped with a big bass going on.

Regular (non-Mesa) V30s tend to sound bright, thin and have a big hole in the lower mids when combined with a Recto, which is where most of the Rectos midrange presence sits. The sound es further exaggerated by the general nature of the G12T-75. When I tried both those setups (4xV30 and then a V30/T-75 mix) I used to run my Recto with the mids wide open and the treble off in an effort to compensate and thicken things up. I almost sold the amp thinking it was a lemon until I played it through a V30 loaded Recto cab and everything suddenly sounded right.

a g12h30 won't handle the amp and also has a mild scoop at some midrange region
the black shadow should work better
much thicker than the t75 and has flatter midrange voicing
or get weber 12v vintage 30 clones
those things sound amazing

Thanks guys.

Not lookings to mess with the pickups; my guitars sound great with the same amps with different cabs. Just looking for a thicker sound out of this cab.

That big of a difference with the Mesa V30? Hmm. If I buy a V30 from the Hollywood store, do Inget one of the Mesa V30s or is that an off-the-shelf Chinese one?

If I do pair it with an H-magnet, it'd be a higher-powered one (the G12H-75 or a Scumback equivalent). I played a Bogner 2x12 with a G12M/G12H mix and other than being terrified the Triple would grenade the poor cabinet, I thought it sounded great, but again was a bit more "rock" than metal, and I have those needs covered already.

Maybe I should just break in the cab first.

Those cabs ARE scooped sounding....try taking the back.off? Or isit front loaded...i cant remember. Also give those speakers a while to break in and live in that cab.

Cab is rear loaded; just a mini 1960B as far as the construction goes. The 1965B is the same dimensions and isn't scooped at all (unless the stock G10L-35 speakers have ridiculous amounts of midrange).

I also did my standard stuff to the cab before wiring it up (sealed around the baffle and handles, Mitchell doughnuts for each speaker, and ~2" of polyfill on the back panel). Maybe I should rip all that out and start from scratch.

You'll have to ask (the Hollywood Store). I know you can order direct from Mesa, but if you can I recommend playing through a Recto cab first so you can hear what I'm talking about and decide whether it's for you or not.

im not sure on the stock speakers..i used a friends quite a few times during gigs when we opened for his band with my rig, and i remember it sounding muffly and kind of buried in the mix sounding.

i have a v30 from england and a celestion elite 80 in my rivera ported 2x12 and it's not scooped at all, and it wasn't when i had the t75 instead of the 80.....big, clear, thumpy.... i love the mix of the two speakers (30 and 75) but needed to replace a 75 that was farty in my jcm800 cab, so put an elite 80 in the rivera. still big and open sounding, but a tad more high end cut, which isn't bad.

i bet its that cab. have you tried it with just the t75 hooked up?

I've played the amp through both a 4x12 Recto Standard and a 2x12 Recto Horizontal. I thought both were scooped (all bass and treble). I'm just looking for something that's not as "round" and warm as my other cab. But I don't want something overly scooped either.

Haven't tried that yet. I probably should just hammer on it for a while and see it the speakers will fill out after a break in. I bought them used but they sound brand new to me. Could be the cab, but the same dimension cab (24x24x12) sounds so thick with 4x10s.

An H30/v30 mix does sound less scooped (I've run both mixes) but as already stated, it wouldn't handle a triple rectifier unless you ran 2 of each in a 412. If you want to stick with that cab you could always try the V30 with a high-powered greenback type speaker. (Creamback, g12-65, scum, weber legacy, etc)

Ripped out the polyfill batting from the backpanel: fixed the issue. Seemed to be making the low end boomy, overwhelming everything else. Much tighter and more balanced without it. Still a little crispy over the top end, but that's been my experience with new V30s no matter what. Time should fix that one.
