Sweep guys, give me your learning experiences good or bad.

I started out with 37 fret long/9 strings across sweeps. That made all others seem easy :D I kid... I kid.

I have a thing for 4 string arpegios these days. Try this one:

4th string 12th fret
4th string 15th fret
3rd string 14th fret
2nd string 13th fret
1st string 12th fret
1st string 13th fret
1st string 17th fret

Dmin9 arp

I'm not a great sweep picker by any means, but I will definitely reinforce the play it slow with a metronome advice - that has never gotten me anything but good results on any technique I have worked on  .

The Frank Gambale book is good, but takes fekkin ages to incorporate it if you've never done that kind of thing before.

I think the most important thing is to learn it with the intention to blend it effectively in with the rest of your playing. The world does not need one more moron with isolated sweep disease.

I learnt the standard Yngwie/Gilbert stuff then just adapted it to different areas on the fretboard. I dig the full width sweep and then right hand tap/slide combo.

Again, like the other stuff, think relaxation and economy of effort...

Well if I ever can nail it rest assured I will not have the disease :D

Here is my 3 and 5 string sweeps. I wish you could see my pick hand. I am far from conventional and usually hammer-on the high E string (almost never pick on the up sweep).

I am playing Randy R's Crazy Train solo...well just the beginning part then I extend it up the neck...

I was watching your pointer finger and figured out how to move easier, use that as the anchor when accending

Thanks Dave.

Thanks guys for the help, I programmed a quick Fruity Loops track with triads moving up in a major pattern with keys as I was trying to hear the context while doing the 2 string exercise. Did about an hour and I am fried, can't do more today.

I love Fruity Loops - one of the funnest programs ever. Great practice tool too!

I have no idea of my technique for sweeps. Maybe that's why I'm so sloppy?!?!

Do you mean you play against the fl track? Or you use it to create the sweep so you can hear what it sounds like before you actually play it? I'm always interested in practice tools and techniques like this. Also, what version of fl are you using?

Dave

I am the worst sweeper ever. I do play fast arpegios (and most of the time tap one note) but I PICK hard everynote instead of just sweeping... oh and my speed kind of goes like roller coster. a lil slow when im on the low strings, then speed increases when I go with the high strings, to get the fastest point (pull off) then slowing down. ONE person liked the way I do them... maybe he was just trying to be nice ? ;p

FL6 producer, I created quick drum and bass track and used some keys to play the triad as a chord and ran up the scale in a major pattern...backing track. I am using Ant's idea of hearing each triad in context, how it sounds played a 4th up, 5th up, etc. Some the chord is basiclly held against the rhythm section while I flail away. Of course I can adjust the bpm as I get better. Way better than a clicker.

Of course I closed the fucking program and have to build it again

I owe a ton to many guys here for what they have taught me over the years and wish I lived closer to many of them. I have been very lucky to meet many and the cool thing is that they are exactly as they are here

DJ,

I took lessons from Paul Gilbert in '86 - '87 and he was obsessed with sweep picking and probably about the best on earth at it too. His approach was simple, to try and get every note to sound exactly the same as the note before no matter what finger you use, what stroke (up or down), what string or if you hammer or pull. One sound, tone and feel. Think one. His advice for me when I started was to play a C chord form (5 strings, A string though high E string) starting with the pinky on the 5th fret of the A string (making the first chord actually a D.

DS = down stroke
UP = upstroke

pinky fifth fret A string DS
ring finger 4th fret D string DS
first finger 2nd fret G string DS
middle finger 3rd fret B string DS
first finger 2nd fret E string DS
pinky finger 5th fret E string US
first finger 2nd fret E string DS
middle finger 3rd fret B string US
first finger 2nd fret G string US
ring finger 4th fret D string US
pinky fifth fret A sting US

all this info is really great!...Im aware that a lot of guitarists gave up on trying sweeping around where i live, because they just didnt stick it out...it takes time, and remember- some of those fretburners do nothing else but play, play,play...A lot of us have day jobs, and a limited time to practice- I do, but I got the sweeps running smoothly anyways! ....Great comments from you all!
