I had this in my browser cache while responding in another thread on this topic. I thought I'd drop it here to set the record straight, as there were some things said about this company that are not true. I can't speak to the 53 point inspection or whatever as I have never bought a guitar from them.

Facts:

As of 2026, there is no verified evidence that Sweetwater Sound pays below the minimum wage. While Sweetwater is a dominant market leader, it does not hold a monopoly in the music instrument industry.

Labor and Wage Practices
Sweetwater is consistently recognized for its workplace culture and employee benefits.
  • Employee Recognition: In 2024 and 2025, it was named among the "Global Top 100 Inspiring Workplaces" and Newsweek’s "Greatest Workplaces for Parents & Families".
  • Compensation: Current 2026 data indicates an average annual pay of approximately $26,000 to $50,436 for various roles, with entry-level hourly rates estimated around $12.50 to $15.00. This is above the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
  • Benefits: The company provides an on-site medical clinic (free for employees and families), 401(k) matching, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement.
  • Vendor Standards: Sweetwater states it maintains high ethical standards for its 1,100+ global vendors to ensure corporate responsibility throughout its supply chain.

Market Position
Sweetwater is not a monopoly, although it is a major force in the retail music industry.
  • Market Share: It is the largest online retailer of musical instruments in the U.S., reporting a record $1.86 billion in revenue for 2025.
  • Competition: It faces significant competition from other large retailers such as Guitar Center (which has over 300 physical stores) and Sam Ash, as well as numerous local independent shops and other online platforms.
  • Ownership: In 2021, the founder sold a majority stake to the private equity firm Providence Equity Partners to fund further growth, though he retained 25% ownership.

That's borderline poverty, no? Even here in the South, that salary range puts you in a trailer park or questionable part of town.

If SW wants to go the route of Walmart, they certainly can. I don't have to buy anything from them, just like I avoid Walmart. It's not going to be sustainable over the long run, as people will just transfer to different careers.

when you buy a $5 set of guitar strings...

Ding ding ding. Don’t know where this came from, but this is usually the first indicator that things are going to go south.

The MI business is not lucrative unless you are a corporate employee.

In my days in MI years ago, I used to transfer all the old stock with Spiffs on them to our store as being on layaway to “Barbaranne Wylde” (Zakks wife). Then, I sold them on eBay and shipped from the store, collecting the commission and Spiffs. Heh. Still had to work hard to get by. Fun job with cool co-workers sometimes) that pays next to nothing.

I had a bad experience with them in the 90s, which was basically a receipt with my credit card information that went to somebody it should not have. Nowadays, they don’t give credit card info on receipts so it’s not a big deal in 2026.

I gave them another shot 10 years ago.

The gentleman that I work with gives me discounts on everything. My phone never rings with annoying calls.

I’m a fairly consistent customer.

I’ve been there a half a dozen times while I travel for work and scored 2 amazing used guitars in the process. One a couple weeks ago and 1 seven years ago. Both of these deals were so good that it’s worth stopping in person to see what’s there when I pass through.

For the last decade, I have zero complaints and have a strong appreciation for my rep.

I’ve also purchased equipment from other retailers with good experiences.

I would recommend my SW rep over everybody else to a personal friend and have done so.
If your results suck, ask me for my rep. 😉

I thought I remember reading sweetwater had some kind of apartment complex with the warehouse and studio and whatever else that the employees lived in, is that really a thing?

These were the 3 facts that stood out to me and I'd want to find out a little more.

I wonder how long it takes to climb up to the higher paying jobs? How many of these roles would be salary plus commission?

Benefits: The company provides an on-site medical clinic (free for employees and families), 401(k) matching, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement.
I'd consider these pretty big benefits. Most companies don't offer anything close to this; at least in my experience. Especially the free medical clinic for employee and family.

Market Share: It is the largest online retailer of musical instruments in the U.S., reporting a record $1.86 billion in revenue for 2025.
I looked this one up, but an answer wasn't disclosed. I'd like to know what percent of the market share is 1.86 billion?

Sweetwater is a great company. They are huge and still operate with the customer first mentality of a small mom and pop store.

The~Dipshit said a lot of things about them with absolutely no proof. His posts are mostly dear diary or in the vein of "People need to hear my opinion" and aside from baseball, the guy just doesn't seem to know shit

You were bragging about this in Lisa's memorial thread also. Do you need me to acknowledge this?

@The~Kid I am (and really all of us are) so very impressed with your sports betting prowess. I wish you would write a book about it.

I have told everyone about it at the gear page, and turns out, they are even more impressed and now see the error of their ways. They have asked me to relay to you that you are welcome back there and they will embrace you with open arms. But only if you first delete your account here.
