I think I need to ditch my desktop and buy a good laptop. But all my plugins are on this computer. Is there a way of transferring plugins you've already bought from one computer to another? Or would I have to re-purchase hundreds of dollars worth of plugins?

In my limited experience this depends on the particular plugin's authorization methods but generally it involves de-authorizing your current PC (through iLok or Native Access for example) and then authorizing the new PC

Ok gotcha. That iLok thing seems like a bit of a pain in the ass. Some of my stuff doesn't even show up in there.

I just went through this dude. My plug ins all have license keys with ilock(i think)so as long as you have the key your good. My desktop is old and I picked up a sweet new laptop at walmart for nothing just to use for this. however with stl I did not need it. just my account info where I registered.

Maybe someone else will chime in with an easier method.

Last time I did this I managed to get everything moved over, except for a couple of really old plugins from developers that no longer exist. There's simply no way to authorize those anymore (when launched, the plug-in tries to connect to an authorization server that no longer exists) :(

^ this was with literally cloning my old pc's hard drive on to a new one btw; even when doing that you will still have to re-authorize

Each company is different. Most of the free ones you could just copy the .dll file from the VSTPlugins folder and you're good. Others you log in to your account on their website. Or they have an authorization program to install on your computer like IK or Waves. Or the iLok thing. So far I don't have any ilok plugs. They are close to getting me though.

What laptop are you getting? I ordered a Razer like a year and a half ago, super fast, vast memory, etc. But, it never seems to run audio apps as good and trouble free as a mac. God damn apple. I broke down and bought a Mac Studio. I am pissed. Within 3 years the mac will be hopelessly outdated and the new version of iOS won’t take. Of course. God damn apple. But for a few years I will have trouble free recording. That’s pretty cool.

Looking at Mac because it has Logic

I wouldn’t say it’s “easy” to transfer everything but you can. Its exactly what you think it is: you gotta re do everything again. Download the apps for whatever software you are using that many of them have ( waves, izotope’s portal, acustica audios web based portal etc) and re download your plugs, authorize them on your new computer. There’s really no easy way around this. Ilok should tell you every authorization on your computer in case you forget what you have. Save all your passwords for each vendors website for easy access back in and redownloading of the plugins and that’s really it.

The Apple obsolescence thing isn't nearly as bad as people make it sound, especially if you buy the pro-level stuff like your Mac Studio. My recording computer is a cylinder Mac Pro from 2013 and it still gets regular updates from them (I just updated to the latest MacOS Monterey) and runs perfect - and I've had like 9 years of hassle-free operation without all of the PC headaches and crashes.

My 2015 mac started developing problems, things going bad, this needs to be replaced, that needs replacing, etc. you seemed to have had a great experience, lucky. I had one max before the 2015 that made it 5 years, but at that point it was like an ancient relic compared to the new stuff. The new stuff was blazing circles around it.

Hopefully the mac studio lasts for a while trouble free.

I really just want to try logic because there’s some plugins my friend showed me that seemed excellent. Like the stock drums on there for example. Wish I could get logic on PC
