Most if not all my amps use pre-amp distortion and l like to play loud. Sometimes I just can't play that loud. Is the Power Station a good option for pre-amp distortion amps or is it for amps that you crank the power section?

Both. It matters on the amp though. Not all amps benefit from running the master up high. I will say the PS is top notch though with many uses.

I just ordered one brand new. I'll get it on Tuesday. I want to see how it works out with my Dual Rectifier. I talked myself into it because it looks like the best one on the market right now. It seems amazing.

I can never play loud so I've been forced to find good tones at a low volume. I've gotten pretty good at it, as a matter of fact. If I end up liking my "quiet" tone enough without it, I'll sell it to you if you want to pick one up a little cheaper than brand new.

Mesa's one of those amps that don't rely on their power section to help shape the tone

While it's true Mesa's get their tone primarily from the preamp section, they don't tend to sound their best until you get the volume up past a certain point. The Power Station may help, but the tone you're after may be coming from the speakers pushed too, which the Power Station won't accomplish.

Even when using clean sounds the preamp and power amp is the entire sound. It is always about how you mix the two. This is true no matter what type of sound you use. Even a Fender Twin does not sound that good till you have it up enough. When anyone uses a attenuation it is about controling the dB's. The Power Station can do a lot more than attenuation. That is only one thing it can do.
If it is useful to you ..... You can only figure that out by using it with your gear.

I am really interested in using one of these with a computer based amp sim like Bias. Sending audio out from the modeling software to the Power Station and into a proper cab sounds very cool to me. And you'd get a proper loop for outboard effects, which is one of the issues I run into with using software amp solutions. It would be nice to have a loop to run delays and some modulation through. Yes, there are plug-ins I could use in the DAW, but we've all got pedals we gravitate towards (and already own).

I wonder how much of the Power Station's power-amp section would "come through" when using it in this fashion. It seems to be a very clear and transparent device, so it might not "add" anything to the tone at all. It might feel better though, which would be very interesting. Running an amp sim with a conventional guitar cab would be very cool. Axe-FX users bypass the speaker sims/IRs and run guitar cabs with great results.

I'm not sure how to integrate the Power Station into a rig like this. Feed the monitor out from an interface into the Power Station? I just had this idea mere minutes ago, and I've been awake for over 24 hours now  I'm not in the right state of mind to figure out the cabeling at the moment. It's something I need to look into, for sure. It would be cool to have an amp sim rig to run at home into headphones/monitors, and then use the same computer into the PS and a cabinet at the rehearsal space/studio/gig/whatever. Recording both the sim directly with cab IRs and layering it with a miked guitar cab would be very cool too

It should help any high gain amp that needs a bit of extra volume to get past fizz from the preamps and sort of "round off" or "smooth out" that low volume fizz.

wish it was rackmount. very cool product.

There's an optional rack mount faceplate for it, that's how I use mine.

Best new gear purchase I've made in a long time. It's really a swiss army knife of guitar gear:

-Attenuator
-Power amp so you can run any preamp through a cab
-High quality effects loop for amps that have a tone sucking loop or have no loop at all. Loop supports both guitar level and line level signals.
-Load that can be used even with the power off. Better load than any other I have tried. Configurable impedance through the edge/deep switches. This is very useful for both recording and fine tuning the attenuation sound.
-Direct box ability. Hook it up as a load for your amp and run a line level signal from the line out to your DAW to record with impulses

I've been using it for all of these, and it's working out better than any single piece of gear I've had that does only one of the above. Buy one!

I can't wait to hook up my iPad using Bias and get the sound going through my cab. I'm so excited about that idea. Not entirely sure how to hook it up though.

Edit: I need a headphone to guitar cable, right? 1/8th to 1/4 to go from my iPad headphone out to the Line In on the PS. is that right?

Looks like I need to buy it  but first I'm going to wait for blitzie's vertict. Let me know if you dig it. I am in Canada so if you don't like it and will ship up north let me know.

Will do! I'll update you via PM. I should get it on Tuesday but might be Wednesday. I'll have a verdict by Saturday. If it's as good as a power amp as it's supposed to be, I'll keep it!

That's right. The iPad output is stereo and the Power Station is mono. So you need a stereo 1/8" to 1/4" mono cable setup. One easy way to do this is to get a stereo 1/8" to 2xmono RCA, and also a mono RCA to mono 1/4" adapter. Attach the 1/4" adapter to the left channel RCA output and leave the right output disconnected from anything. That will splice off the left channel only into the power station.

I bought this one. Will this work?

I think it will work. Depends on whether the Power Station line-in is balanced or unbalanced. If unbalanced it should work. It would ground (mute) the right channel and pass only the left channel in. That's what you want. If it's balanced then it will probably sound thin. That would pass only the difference between left and right in to the amp. But if you can force bias to send the left channel only then it will still work even if it's a balanced line-in.

So it should work, but you may need to switch to something like the above cable setup if it sounds weird.

It sold in 13 minutes. The one yesterday sold almost as fast.
