I am aware this thread is a bit old, but I just bought a load of these standard-pin ECC83s and they're by far the best pre-amp of new production I have ever tried.

Don't be mistaken: Thickwood is absolutely correct that these are not screened standard Sino stock. Sinos are known for their "lively mids" and it's absolutely none of that in this valve. Actually these are so smooth and even you just wouldn't believe it. And although they are rolled off in the highs they're still pretty forward and shimmers like there's no tomorrow with some drive fed into them. On Tubemaze.info they're described as "flute sounding" and that would be a fair description.

Neither the long-plate Gold Lion is not a rebranded something else. I'm aware there are some evil rumours flying around the Internet about New Sensor screening their products into brand this or brand that, which is unfounded. The plates may look identical, same with the bottles and maybe even the spacers too. But the coatings are quite different, as are a few visual bits and pieces and some that aren't so visual.

Now some valve guru may claim they measure identically. If that's the case, so be it. But if measurements and sound were one we would hear things numerically.

I wish I knew which ecc83 tube your talking about, I looked on tube maze and no unbranded ecc83 came up in the search.
It is important that you not, to get the highs over whelming your full chords as this will coverup the ringing individual notes in the chord .
I call this smearing which I did not no was there until a tube change , that was a good change for the chording for real.

Vintage 12ax7 GE grey plates are very bright and lacking in lows .
Sylvania grey plates have strident highs and has the 1963 Santana lead sound down pat , warning - do not cut on a fuzz face pedal it will melt your face strait away honest.
Vintage Mullard into overdrive begans nice but gained up are all midrange and all warmth at that point cello notes are good and that's it !
Mullard is steller as a V1 tube or either in the FX - EQ recovery stages, not my favorite OD tube in my amp.
I have a shoe box half full of 12ax7-ecc83-5751 tubes of new and old !
My best discovery is a black plate 5755 Raytheon that sells for $5.00 because you need a adapter for it to work in a 12ax7 socket.
Wow it is a great sounding tube pushed, it is a 5751 ordered with a different pin out for the military so a adapter works fine if no retainers are around the tube .
