never really boosted my 5150 II as i prefer it as is without any boosts, clean EQ stuck in the effects loop for a level boost come solo time and thats about it - just hit the effects loop button on mine
but between the two i would recommend trying this - having played the maxon 808, tube screamer 808, and SD-1, i didnt like the first two very well. much more of an SD1 person IMHO.
having said that, i think this might be more towards your liking -
Another pedal i like is the zakk wylde overdrive - its circuit is loosely based on the SD-1 as well, and as a clean boost on the front end i do like what it adds in sustain
not much help i know, but having tried them all the SD-1 and a modified ibanez tube screamer seem to always be the standard - i prefer them myself from what experience i have with them.
Thanks guys. Back in college i was using an Ibanez Turbo Screamer with me 5150 and Ultra Plus heads, miss that tone.
Figured the Maxon and the TC would be better than that.
I think i'm leaning towards the Maxon, so many OD's out there though........
I use a Nova Drive and a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 with my Riveras. I have no idea what would work with a 5150 though. They are extremely gainy on their own. I prefer to back the gain down on my amps and boost with the pedal.
Me? I use it on it's own. When I said I use the Fulldrive 2, I don't use them together just as a different flavor depending on my mood. I have a very early Fulldrive that I love, but I only use it for 2 different things. One to boost a gainy amp, but with the gain backed off at the amp. I do that on my Riveras KHR channel 2. I usually keep it on around 7 and use the Fulldrive. Otherwise, I set it for distortion on a clean channel or my Marshall class 5.
The Nova Drive I use for the Distortion or Rat sound a lot. I either use it on a clean channel or layer it on my Riveras 2nd channel. It is very flexible, depending on how you set your amp (and the pedal.) I also use the Tube Screamer side of the Nova. I particularly like that you can dial in some clean sound as well and get a good mix if you want. The fact that both sides can run together in either configuration as well as parallel really makes it extremely flexible. It sounds very good as well. The Nova Drive and my Fulldrive are 2 pedals I will never sell.
