Tell me about loop switchers.

It's been a while since I plugged in my trusty MPX-1 into the effects loop of my Mark V. I have to say the tone was a bit Meh as it seemed to rob the meatyness of the tone. I don't remember it being like this when I had the TriAxis. Maybe that preamp had a better loop than the V, but that preamp doesn't sound as good as the real amp either..

I'm ready to go to the mountain with real pedals and a switcher.

What's good transparent MIDI switcher? Show me yours! :rock:
 
The new favorite seems to be the boss ES-8. I've gone with the Disaster Area DPC-8EZ

I really like my Musicom EFX midi pedal looper. I purchased an older model barely used for about $200 last year. I didn't need the added features of the later more expensive models. It's also quite small for having 8 loops and is built like a tank. I did some research then and found that many pros were touring with them (i.e. Pete Thorn) and many builders were incorporating them in their client's boards. I always look to see what the avid touring guitarist uses when it comes to this type of equipment.


 
The Musicomlab 62M looks real nice but I think I'd rather have the Boss ES-5 when it comes out. Similar in functions and price but I think the interface and programming is easier with the Boss.

I agree. If I was starting a new board I would be looking at the Boss stuff too. As long as they aren't giving touring musicians issues. Also, don't know the size but the ES-5 may be longer than the musicom stuff?
 
The ES-5 has pretty solid features for the price. If you don't need stereo outs or a volume pedal insert (vol pedal would take one of the 5 loops if you want it before time based effects) then it's golden. I'm trying to decide if I can get by with the 5 or if I need the ES-8.
 
Looking a little more closely at the 62M. It has one more loop and a volume pedal insert for a few bucks less. But you can't change the pedal order as far as I know.
 
A lot of people talk about the programmable pedal order thing being such a great feature of the Boss but I have to say that I have not found the need to change order, and if I did it's very simple to plug and unplug.

you guys get pretty fancy with it!!! I go for the ultra low tech approach and I love it.

all of my top row of pedals are run through the mini one loop true bypass unit at the bottom left. I basically use it to turn on and off multiple pedals at once. plus it cleans up my signal chain.

 
That's some cool stuff. I still have a Ground Control, so I really like the idea of MIDI. I'm no opposed to a smaller rack, even tho a floor setup is less to carry around.

I can get a loop and a channel switcher from Voodoo Labs. It would be like the old TriAxis setup, but a lot lighter... My old Shock Rack was the shit, but only if you can afford someone else to carry it around for you.. That thing was heavy and awkward. :doh: I could make a 4 space in a soft bag work now. :lol: :LOL:

I need to buy a new rack tuner tho because somehow I plugged it into the speaker output of my MV. :cry: Korg has a new one that's cheaper than the one I fried..

i just got an es 8 and im only hooking up a few pedals...I haven't fired it up yet but i'm starting to see the appeal of getting a fractal fx8. Im just not sold on the all in one solution for sound quality vs pedals. I think its a harder setup to begin with but less tweaking down the line.
 
The more I look at the Musicomlab 62M, the more I like it over the Boss ES-5. It's a little more flexible in some important ways. I'm not so sure how important it is to me to be able to re-route pedals in front of the amp like the Boss ES-5 allows. Although, I like that the Boss let's you run pedals in parallel. That's pretty cool. But the 62M has the Volume pedal insert and an extra loop. Plus, you can do a stereo pedal if need be and put a couple of pedals in your amp's loop. Tough choice.

I'm saving up for a rackmount Bradshaw loop/switcher right now. It's crazy expensive but CAE will make it to your exact specs and will consult with you to figure out what it is you really need.
