Thinking I want the EVH to be my next amp purchase. Does it need a boost to be tight? Cleans decent (not looking for Fender cleans)? Is it reliable?
Give me some input and THANK YOU ahead of time!
Channel 2 doesn't need a boost to be tight but I think channel 3 does.
Channel 2 is the highlight of the amp. When people demo it they jump right to the high gain channel missing the essence of the amp (especially in a band setting). I boost channel 2 with a Maxon OD9 not for tightness but to increase gain/sustain. Very urgent in-your-face tone here. Channel 2 gain stages are different than channel 3. The EVH is almost 2 different amps in 1. Channel 1 and 2 share the same tonal structure and Channel 3 is totally different.
Channel 3 is saturated and doesn't jump out of the mix when used as a rhythm channel IMO. Sounds great for leads. I crank the mids past noon.
Channel 1 clean is more than decent when 2 things are done 1) crank the volume 2) use an EQ pedal. It's just OK otherwise.
The EVH has been my main gigging amp for 4 years and have never had major issues besides a blown preamp tube and a bad footswitch cable. I even have one of the dreaded "early" models (internet folklore

)
I run it midi and channel switching is TOTALLY silent and instant.
