Tom, I had an SS in a couple of guitars, and Dimarzio's description is right on. Unless you're using a modeler or something with a lot of mids, low mids in particular, you'll find that pickup lacking body. Knowing that you have a Splawn, I'd look elsewhere. What kind of sound are you going for?

Hey Jeff! I would be using this in my Axis that I use in my no name metal band with some friends on thurs nites. I am using my 5150 with this band and tuned a half step down. i sold the stock pups because i already have another axis. I put a Super Distortion and a paf pro in it and while I like the paf pro Im not diggin the Super Distortion

I'd like to try a Norton, AT1 (which is supposed to be closest to EVH/axis pups), or whatever else someone could reccommend ;)

Hope all is well brother!

Hey Tom, word on the EBMM board for a long time was that the EVH pickup was between a Tone Zone and Air Zone; I heard it described as a non-Air'ed Air Zone. I think the Air portion of the pickup is putting what amounts to a plastic spacer between the humbucker's baseplate and the poles, reducing the output a bit and making it more "vintagey". Whatever! I have heard great things about the Norton, for what it's worth.

Oh, and things are freaking great here, had a heck of a good year...and you?

Latest news on the EBMM board is that the AT-1 is now the closest pup so who knows, lol

All is good here. Family is good, job is good...no complaints :)

SS is midscooped, so it sounds kinda lifeless. I had one in a Charvel Model 5. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone honestly...

I've got one in my Ibanez JPM and am not a fan of it.

SS is very scooped!!! Me no licky!!      There is no DiMarzio pickup that I like anyways except for the SD. What are you really looking for?

The mid drop in the SS makes it great for lower gain usage. Go for the Norton.

The SS has a lot of definition for chording and also zero mud, but on the flip side it´s pretty thin.

The AT-1 is the closest from what i have seen as well. Apparently you can remove the "air" portion from it and it is even closer.
