I am getting a Square 1 modded GCX in a trade for my mesa boogie combo shell. I want to know how good it is, and how much better it is compared to a stock GCX, and how it compares with an effects gizmo

Here are the mods done to it:
1. Front mount locking connectors for MIDI in (5 pin DIN) and Guitar IN
2. Front feed thrus (send and return for loops or volume pedal loop)
3. Blue LEDs for all switching functions
4. Upgraded buffer (BurrBrown)
5. Added rear power jack (9v AC) standard

I needed a new switcher for one of my racks and thought this would be good for switching multiple preamps, amps and some fx.

here's a pic of it

Was looking for one of those myself. Good find.........there's not many around.

He basically made a combination switcher and rack interface with it. The thru's up front and the midi controller input will keep you out of the back of the rack to rig up/down. You can bypass that god-awful buffer and all the loops will be wired in series (I think) so you don't have to jump loops. Plus, blue light rule on stage!

Hit me up if it doesn't suit you.

Cool. What's wrong with the buffer in the original gcx? I have never used a gcx, so I am not experienced with them.
and this one has the BurrBrown upgraded op amp, so is it a lot better than the original, or not so much?

Thanks

Buffers come in many different forms and lots of tonal variation. You would just have to try one to compare. When I buy stuff, I make sure it is able to be bypassed. The only one I sort of like is the one LA Sound Design builds. The others in production stuff can be quite sterile.

Oh look, they hacked up a gCX so it can be a wannabe RJM unit...neat.
Kinda I guess, I have some Rjm stuff, so it will he interesting to see how it compares as a switcher to the rg-16 or effects gizmo.

I'm interested in this mod, how can I find a Square 1 contact or homepage?

On huge racks Inc .com the guy named Stilwel has an account there, and you can contact him there. The mods that mine have will cost 299$ USD.

My GCX should be arriving Friday :)

Last I contacted Stilwel, which was a while ago, he wasnt doing any more mods. That may have changed, but if not you have a pretty rare piece. All the reviews on these have been extremely positive which made me contact him in the first place. Good luck.!
