TGP is talking unironically about Billie Eilish

I totally forgot as a musician or "music aficionado" when a small time young artist all of a sudden blows up and becomes huuuuge and wins a bunch of Grammies you have to do either of these two things:

1. You have to totally go against the grain. You know call the artist a hack and not talented to maintain your own edginess as a musician. Besides the fact artist is making millions because well you know... they suck.

or...

2. If for some reason #1 doesn't work then you can say that you were fan of said artist waaaaaaaaay before they were famous or hit mainstream. You know that way you can claim credit that you have an ear better than everyone else since you knew they were going to be huuuuge to maintain your own credibility as a musician since you have an ear for talent.

I guess we are going with #1 in this thread?

I saw her perform a few times, didn't seem as though she was using a backing vocal track or auto tune live? :scared:

She's very young, just turned 18 and is pretty unique, writes her own music with her brother. I don't see where the hate is in her case.

Nicki Minaj made millions too with her music but no one in their right mind is saying that she's a great singer. People listen with their eyes these days and care more about style and looks than actual talent.

And she being young or writing her own music doesn't make her a great artist. And a lot of singers today don't use autotune or backing vocals live and they end up sounding like shit because in the studio they utilize every possible cheat out there.

She doesn’t need to use auto tune, the vocal lines are all mumbled/whispered and practically monotone.

She’s the perfect standard bearer for zoomers with her cultivated droopy eyes look and stupid general appearance loaded with post-ironic irony. Trying hard to appear to not try hard. Still doesn’t look as stupid as Post Malone though so she’s got that going for her.

Very strange. I’m very picky about vocal accuracy. Every vid of her live has been spot on accurate. In fact in a duet with Rihanna, who is celebrated for her musical skill, she made Rihanna look like an amateur as she hit every note and Rihanna struggled.

Totally understand not liking her music. But to deny objective measures of her ability just seems like hating.

My wife likes her, so I happened to catch her Oscar performance. I thought she did a great job. Watching her sing live is different than listening to her because the recordings sound like crap. She was also humble when receiving all her awards.

I've never listened to Billie Eilish nor have I cared to, but there fact that someone is so aggravated by TGP and her that they needed to start this thread probably says more than anything else.

Pretty much. ...and for good reason.

i'm in shape, have all my hair, 37 (old ) and yeah, clinging to 80's metal tunes, and hate everything new.
I've seen everything done before, better, 20-30 years ago.
good rock/pop music: 1955-2005. rip.

Hey I’m borderline gen x/millennial but I live in a college town because my wife is a professor - gen z truly has this thing about trying very hard to seem to not care about anything while simultaneously exaggerating everything. It’s so tiresome.

Every generation has their bullshit including ours, and I feel it is the duty of all older generations to bust the balls of the next and continue this cycle. There are plenty of good zoomers but it is definitely their thing to appear as much as possible that they don’t care about anything - vocal fry/monotone talking, slack facial expressions, shitty attitude - all cultivated ways of appearing, speaking, and acting. Yet at the same time they’re all supposedly going to commit suicide over anything that might upset them, anything they remotely enjoy is “amazing, the best thing ever, this is my life.” I hear Billie Eilish and I feel like I really hear the voice of a generation.

Wow I didn't know people actually don't like Billie Eilish. See Me In a Crown is a killer song; I lost my mind when I heard it months ago. Sounds like a NIN/Trent Reznor track. I also liked When The Party's Over and Bury a Friend.

I don't know much about her public persona, but I'd assume that nearly any pop start is putting on an act. Doesn't really matter to me one way or another. Great thing about art is that the artist is just a vehicle for it; the art's meaning and impact is unique to the viewer/listener, so I don't need to get caught up in trying to super analyze whatever is going on in Billie Eilish world to like her songs.

It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard musically. I actually like some of the more recent “alt pop rock” or whatever the hell they consider it. I hear a lot of it that seems to combine elements of new wave, post rock, and electronic music of some sort and while some of it Ibhate, some it I don’t mind. Anything I’ve heard from Billie Eilish is like audio Benadryl.

Like i said, it sounds pretentious and artsy. A lot of artists seem to have that melancholic sound in their music which makes it flat sounding and boring.

Funny thing is that i'm 26 myself and i still can't stand the music that used to played when i was a kid or what's new today.
