TGP is talking unironically about Billie Eilish

IMHO mainstream music has never been as homogenised, wishy-washy and lacking good melodies as it is today; there can be no question.

If I'm wrong after following it for over 40 years I might as well give up right now, and I suspect I'm not the only one who feels that temptation creep in now and again after hearing the complete and utter shit that passes for art worthy of the consumer dollar these days.

The bar has never been set so-low, and yet I'm guessing that real class would likely be judged by the masses to be well below it. Talk about irony - that's the ultimate irony of today's musical mindset if you ask me.

Finally so common sense from someone in this thread, thank you.

My pleasure and honour, brother.

I'm holding my tongue and have deleted several post draughts 'cause I don't want to criticise the gal or seem unfair. She's having a go so good on her.

I'll say this 'though - the word "genius" certainly appears to have lost its gravitas. There'll be another one next year to add to a long queue of "geniuses", none of whom I feel deserve the label. That's "life" I guess - I was bound to become a fuddy-duddy at some point... like when I was 33 and the start of the '90s marked the beginning of pop music's steep quality-curve drop-off.

I've got to play all this back:

A teen pop star who looks like a teen pop star and appeals to teens is bothering some older men.

Some older gentlemen are being accused of liking the music of their youth and not liking this, and being rude about it. They may also have weight and hairline issues. The accusers also take this opportunity to take a swipe at famous artists/bands from the 80's.

Other older gentlemen are more purist in their arguments, and simply know what is quality music and have laid down a serious judgement on the teen pop star.

I don't know...my daughter likes Billie Eilish so that makes me happy. I still like all my old 80's music, Dokken, Metallica, etc. So that makes me happy too.

I don't feel angry...would wearing tan pants change that? Probably...I hate the look.

Boomers just being boomers. Are we not entertained yet?

I don't like her vibe/fashion and general cranky "whatever" poor me teenage against. But musically she's brilliant. Watch the Carpool karaoke no auto tune here.
She recorded all of her music in a bedroom with her brother. No studio, no producers, no engineers. Just a small bedroom with some reg. home recording gear. I tip my hat to her craft. And poor one out for all the haters.
Sounds like ingredients of a shitty recording to me. And labeling me a boomer when i'm 26, delightful.

And yeah you can really tell from a carpool karaoke if someone can sing or not. :DDDDDDDD

K boomer. I'm sure your bedroom recordings are selling millions, right?

who are you listening to these days?? i could use some advice on good music

I don't really have a serious point to add.

So I'll add the Dwight Schrute version of this argument:

A) "Question. Why is Billie Eilish a bad musician?

B) "That's a ridiculous question."

A) "False. All modern pop singers are bad."

B) "That's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought..."

A) "Fact. Real pop singers eat beets. Pop stars. Beets. Battlestar Galactica."

B) "Pop stars do not...What is going on?! What are you doing?!"

Guess I’m really old and square. I had to Google this person just to know who y’all were talking about.

Music is art, which has always been subjective. To start this thread just to whine and bitch about other people liking an artist you don't like is suuuuper lame.

PS: It's 2020, you should have a better ear for AutoTune by now.

how can you know if i make shitty music if i haven't even released everything?

Exactly. None of us know. You haven't produced anything.

But I do know that Billie Ellish sings dead-on-balls accurate in every live recording I've heard/seen.

I don't have to like her music to know she's a hell of a singer.

All I know about you:
-you are probably 26
-you probably play guitar
-you think Billie Ellish is such a bad musician that you despair about the sad state of music today.
-you should probably focus more on your sweep arpeggios than TGP/Bille Ellish

All that said, I understand where you're coming from. I also used to think music needed to pass my purity test before it could be considered "good."

i checked her album out this week to see what the hype was after the grammys, im glad i did because i dont remember the last album ive been so immersed in. i love it. how does one listen to this song and not say its great?

It started out the usual style which I’m not into at all but I like where she went with it. Listened all the way through. Thought ultimately it was pretty good. At times it sounded like something that would be in the “we’ve become estranged montage” in a shrek movie...lol

Not sure what is going on in this thread but here is my .311 cents:

1.) Who gives a fuck?

2.) Pop is pop because it is popular. Popular is 'in' because people like it.

3.) Never heard of Billie Eilish.

4.) I'm a product of the 80's. Love me some 80' hair metal. I'm also a product of the 60's and 70's and really got into the grunge and alt era's of the 90's. For the last 10 years I've been into 311 and Roots of a Rebellion.

5.) Now as 'old' guy I frickin love KSE, Slipknot, Ghost and also have playlists for T-Swift, Kesha, No Doubt, Britney, etc.

6.) Point? ....frickin relax.

(will check out the EiLish stuff later) :dunno:

It's well done for what it is, but what it is does nothing for me. It doesn't resonate with me at all, not musically, not with its "vibe," and certainly not with it's lyrical content that I cannot take at all seriously coming from someone who hasn't finished puberty and whose brain is the better part of a decade from completing its frontal lobe development.

That said, I think she'll survive not penetrating the 30-something metal guitarist market.

Never heard of Billie until recently she was mentioned in a YouTube video. From reading this it sounds like it’s pop and I’ve never liked pop as far back as I can remember. It’s not an age thing, pop is well pop. But I can appreciate any angle that someone takes to set themselves apart and it sounds like shes done that, so good on her. In sure it’s not for me, because it’s pop, but to each their own.

Now the new Deathwhite, that’s good shit

With that logic i should be appreciating musically lil pump and Justin Bieber because they have sold millions no? You see, at least i don't judge musicians based on how much they've sold.

Nothing that's produced these days, my music taste is somewhere around 70s, 80's and 90's in various styles but mostly Hair Metal. And yeah you're same guy who likes modelers so what should i expect from you? Not liking artificial performances?

Sure, but there's shitty art and good art, and the shitty one should be ridiculed so it won't gain a following. And i do and she uses it, or why do you think her voice sounds so fake in her recordings?

Ah you're one of those retards who think that you're not allowed to critisise anyone unless you're doing it better yourself. :--D Well too bad that i already took a big dump at your shitty pop idol. And yeah i'd rather do my sweeping arpeggios than listen to a objectively a shitty artist that also happens to be pretentious and thinks that she's so different and anti-culture(like 99% of mumblers these days?).

My kids like Billie Ellish. I let them pick the majority of the music when we drive. Honestly its alright for what it is. I'd much rather have my kids listening to her than say boy bands or R&b.

i dont own any modelers dude, at least be an asshole with your facts strait.

That one word kinda sums up how I feel about many "modern" singers, mate; I can't for the life of me understand what the Hell they're saying.

Take arguably the most-popular these past few years - Ariana Grande. It sounds to me like she's singing with her mouth almost-closed. Ridiculous. She hits the notes great, but that means little if the listener has to strain to discern what you're trying to articulate. The last thing you wanna do when creating music art (99% of the time), is detract from it by requiring the listener to maintain a left-brain focus in order to calculate stuff that ought to simply flow into the brain / be a natural part of the experience. IMHO.

It's no different from having a conversation with someone; you don't want to have to make a huge effort to understand the words he or she's using.

Congratulations. You’ve done what many thought impossible. You’ve effortlessly combined the grouchy narrow-mindedness of a senior with the whining helplessness of a tween.

Keep practicing those “sweeping arpeggios.” Maybe someday someone will have heard of you.
