Your optimism is admirable but let's be real....there is no election since maybe the 80's that wasn't a complete shit show in terms of the my side/your side no me/no you stuff. Tribal politics and wedge issues have been the norm since the 90's when the democrats stopped supporting blue collar workers and farmers.
I think if Kamala (or anyone) just stays on topic and lets Trump spout off about whatever he wants to regardless of the question he was asked, she will come out looking real good to a lot of people.
I think you are right but Trump has way of getting under people's skin so I suspect a status quo shit show. If she doesn't get elected Biden-Harris will go down as one of the most infamous presidencies in history not only to republicans but also democrats because the democrats will blame the party heads for shoving her into the nominee position. They can write all the glowing reviews of her they want but she is an unlikable personality.
