Man, when you find that perfect combo of parts, your rig really does come alive.
I have a Chupacabra and a Yeti. And while they're both basically the same amp (just slight voicing changes), I still prefer the Chupacabra for it's nasty upper-mid snarl. The Yeti is fuller, tighter, but not as angry. I've been using 'em with a Bogner 4x12 loaded with original G12-65s. Well I loaded another Bogner cab with new Chinese reissue Greenbacks. At first they were very fizzy and beamy. But after a week or so of playing at pretty low volumes, they've begun to really open up. They now sound tight and aggressive and quite spacious, if that makes sense. Like the sound isn't right in your ear. It's resonant and bouncy.
I also replaced the Chinese/Ruby EL34BSTRs in the Yeti with NOS '70s Teslas (not JJ). And the amp came alive. I've never noticed such a huge tonal change from power tubes. Usually it's pretty subtle. But for whatever reason, this Yeti is brighter and more open and more "woody" sounding with these tubes. And they've added some upper-mid grind. I also removed the insulation from the inside of the cab.
All of this has really made the setup perfect. It's nice flipping on your rig and having "your sound" right there.
I was thinking of using the Yeti as a platform for various mods. But I might just leave it be now.
By contrast, I really like RFT and EH EL34s in the Chupa. But it sounds great through either cab (Greenies or 65s). The 65s are a bit dark for the Yeti. V30s are ok. But Greenbacks have to be my favorite speaker of all time.
