been thinking about building a Marshall 18 watter, then remembered these things. I got a 1959 not being used - sounds like I can use just 2 yellowjackets and drop it to about 20 watts - seems like a winner to me - any reason not to go with it?

been using YJ's in my JTM45, JCM800 2203X & splawns for years without any issues other than using an outbored EQ when I need a little more bass end

No reason that i know...I used them for years without any problem (with a M&B though).

I wouldn't mind trying that in my 1959 too. What would you run the head at, ohm wise though, into a 16 ohm cab if only using two YJ's.

8 ohms

I am surprised the Yellow Jackets are not more popular, I like mine.

They work great.

Running a pair in my DRRI. Sounds pretty close to my AC15.

Ha, I was thinking the same thing recently (wanting a 20W) but then I remembered I have some yellow jackets. The last time I used them I didn't notice much difference in volume and liked the EL34s better sound wise. I will have to pull out the YJs and mess with them again.

wow, no kidding! I was thinking if I just put 2 on my 1959, it might be useable for club gigs, maybe not :(

Don't be a puss Darren! Put in PPIMV ;) :D

That being said, I wonder what some YJ's would sound like in my DSL50

it's actually got a ppimv - I just can't stand the tone when I actually use it :D . The amp actually sounds great with my Ho attenutor, I should just start using that on gigs. I liked the fact that the Yellowjackets lessen the strain on the transformer, but I only run the master at 6 anyway, so I'm probably not running it that hard anyway.

Why not just use one of the extra output jacks (like in a Marshall) and install a simple pentode/triode switch to cut the power? It is a pretty simple, reversible mod. This way you can leave in the EL34's and just flick the switch and cut the output when necessary. The parts of the switch and resistors should only be a few dollars and there are a bunch of websites to show you how to wire it up...

that's definitely worth checking out. I'll give that a try just out of curiousity as to how it affects the tone and volume - thanks!

Not a huge difference in tone or volume with them from what I've heard.

Used to be a guy named Smicz who had a similar product( called TAD 1 TAD 2 TAD 3 for different plate voltages of host amp) that used a mini 6AK6 output tube at about 4 watts a pair.

Still surprisingly loud but great sounding at low volume heard them over the phone once in a Marshall - sounded great.

They do not drop the volume a lot, but it does .... they do effect the point of break up and tone shape a fair amount, this is effected by what EL84 you are using with the Yellow Jacket.

Had a phase where I really loved 'em ... volume didn't drop much but the point of breakup sure did as did the amount of low end.....but I probably only noticed a lot due to playing alone.

I should pull 'em out again...the lead tones were really sweet....Triode mode YJ pair somewhere in the 9W range.
