All I can say is "WOW!"... Ok... I can (and will) say more than that...
Went to see The Aristocrats last night at - get this - the Whittier Community Theater. Usually it is community productions of "The Man of La Mancha" that play there, but I digress...
Small place - I'd say the size of a high school auditorium - but the sound was phenomenal. You could tell the band was getting off on the sound as well, as Marco even mentioned how pleased they were with it. My only complaint was that Guthrie was a bit buried at times, especially when playing faster, clean passages.
For those who know The Aristocrats music, it's very jammy, and recorded, I prefer Guthrie's solo "Erotic Cakes" CD by a wide margin. However, live, the tunes are much more impressive - the interplay between the the three musicians, the strength of the improvisation and the incredible joy shared between them makes for one great experience for the listener. I'll tell ya Marco couldn't wipe the smile off his face the whole night and neither could I. A lot of what goes on in the tunes has to do with non-verbal queues between the guys and so they all are facing each other more than the audience - you feel like you are in on the most incredible garage jam you've ever seen in your life. Mind boggling musicianship, as expected, but the tunes are a real journey as well - this is not just a night of mindless wanking, although there are plenty of technical pyrotechnics...
No one dominates - everyone gets their time in the spotlight in each composition and that was very cool. They even share the job of fronting the band - each giving little explanations of the tunes they wrote, which were quite funny and intelligent. At one point, they were using a couple of toy pigs and a rubber chicken to do this hilarious, but still musical rhythmic thing in one of the songs...
Anyway, a thoroughly enjoyable musical experience was had by all and I highly recommend you catch these guys if you get a chance... just thought I'd share...
