I think I'm gonna sell one of my 2x12 Bogners & get a 4x12 & I want the crunchiest one, which is due to not speakers that are inside the box, but the box itself.

So which one is it?

I know Mesa Traditional 4x12 is one.
I know Bogner 4x12 is not, so isn't Orange as I recall.

Depends on your tunning. If your drop tuning I would go for something made from voidless 14ply Birch, Standard tunning I would go for a poplar cab. Cab volume is another issue you might consider drop tunning you want a larger volume cab, less lowend roll off. I think crunchy would be more a function of amp and speaker and not so much the cab. I know this doesn't answer your question but there's just to many cabs to say this is the one you should go for.

I think he's asking what cabs "breath" as opposed to how a Bogner cab sounds very tight and almost compressed or stuffy(not in a bad way).
When I think "crunchy" for cabs, I think traditional recto and Marshall 1960.

glassjaw7 got it right to some extent. A lot of that stuffy feel in Bogner cabs comes from the insulation inside, once you remove it that stuffy feel lifts. That said your overall description is correct.

Whatever cab I buy I'm most likely than not gonna change to different speakers inside. so that's not a subject.

I like Bogner cabs a lot & I'm gonna keep one of them for sure, that said sometimes I want something different. It feels like whatever the Bogner cabs are made of is pretty thin or low density, the speakers move the wood a lot, which is cool & really valuable in some cases, but there are times I want something more mean. I know whatever Mesas were made of gave them some of that quality, unfortunately there were also a bunch of things that I didn't like that much about Mesa cabs, like the way they would handle the low end. I wish there was a good hardwood cab builder around here, I'd love to try one, might be just the thing for me.

In my very limited experience the "breath" Glassjaw is talking about is largely a function of the resonance of the cab. This is directly related to the wood (weight, density, structure) and the layout of the cab (size, construction and bracing).

You might get away with a hardwood cab with very little or no bracing but I guess the cabs own resonance will be at such a high frequency it will rather get piercing as it will get breathing if that makes sense.

EVH cab....

Which speakers do you like in your Bogner cabs best? See you have M75's and Webber 1225's... I have H30's in my Bogner now - may be looking for something a tad crunchier.

+1 for the EVH or a Cornford cab, think they're both pine. if you're drop tuning the Cornford might be better with the V30's, but the EVH speakers are mighty tastety. the EVH are some best readily availible cabs around.

i'd agree with the wood making deference in this case, and as mention Poplar plywood would probably be a good choice also. Carvin does Poplar, i've never heard thier cabs, but i've got some home made poplar cabs and the rock.

speakers will play a big roll also.

I actually like both the Webers and Scumbacks in the Bogner. Currently I have 3 Scumbacks and 1 Weber in my Bogner Straight. The Scumbacks have a bit less crunch, but sound so damn incredible. They are the perfect speaker to my ear. My fourth Scumback is at the studio....I use one of each for recording.

As far as crunch goes, the Webers will do that in spades. They are more scooped to my ear. I have four Webers in my EVH cab right now and it's certainly very metal sounding! I also had two EVH's and two Webers previously and that was also nice and crunchy.

Another idea for the OP would be to rip the foam out of the back of his Bogner.....

Have you played thru Jordon's Splawn cab? I miss that cab, I may try to grab a Splawn 2x12.

After hearing so many new cabs my favorites are still old Marshall cabs loaded with either Greenbacks or H30's. I know i know, older is better right?

But, i picked up a handwired Marshall 4x12 staight loaded with Heritage H30's. DAMM, that's all i can say. It made me get rid of a Bogner OS2x12.

Thanks, I'm gonna try to find some time to go & try these.

Already done.

It actually does make sense.

Since when does he have a Splawn?

oh!

sadly it's often in peoples lower end lines. check stuff like Crate, B-52, etc., and even they're using birch more and more.

I know my Mesa Trad. is pretty hard to beat, my 1960 ain't bad either, with the right amp and guitar. Haven't played through a Bogner, Splawn, Mills or Cornford, so I guess my frame of reference isn't that wide..
