The Furman PQ3 boost method- in REVERSE

i'm not sure if this might help but , using the amp EQ you can get volume levels down pretty well while still retaining the tonal character to some extent

Basically zero out your EQ, presence , bass, middle, treble, all on 0 , doing this will drastically reduce the output volume

i do this when i run the jcm800 2204 50watter i have at home, i run into the Hi input with the preamp gain cranked and master volume fairly low, roll guitar volume down for cleans , it's much more manageable where volume is an issue , then you can use a pedal an EQ pedal like you mentioned or even a compressor with output set very low to imitate turning the volume knob down for clean, it's one way of doing it, basically having a 'limiter' to allow for a clean tone

Here's a video i made of the amp in question, in the video it's at pretty loud volumes, but everything is in the guitar volume pot =) and an extra boost for higher gain

My humble submission. The PQ3 bug bit me too. Pinch harmonics were

However, the noise was almost unbearable, even with a Decimator.

Bottom line = tone was OK, similar to "Out of the Cellar".

does your version of the pq-3 have the ground lift switch on the back
if it does have you tried the pq-3 with the ground lift switch in different positions
I use my pq- 3 every day and for some reason I quite often have to move the ground lift switch or its unbearably noisy but once the switch is moved it quiets right down.
I use mine into the high input of my 2203 but I use the low ins and outs of the furman and I use a smartgate and its whisper quiet.
I would say this though I have now owned quite a few different pq-3 I think maybe 5 in total and they were all quite different.
one of them had so much noise I couldnt use it no matter what I did with it and I have seen 1 and owned another that was modded for noise reduction but the mod fucked with the available gain really badly

ymmv but... my favourite way I have of using the pq-3 is set the preamp output low on the furman at around 3-4 so its just clipping the amp a little bit then run a boost like boss od-1 or sd-1 into the low input of the furman then go from the low output of the furman into an mxr smartgate into the high input of the jmp 2203 , this method is completely quiet and yet it has a fuckload of gain way way more gain than can be acheived by using just a boost pedal it and the tone can be altered by using the eq settings on the furman and the jmp 2203

I have to give a nod to mark day regards this as he talked to me awhile back on how he used one while I was asking him about an egnater amp and once I got my head round this it then very quickly become my go to method of using my 2203 and furman pq-3
I did have two Cameron CCV 100 and they have now both been sold as a result of this...

Thanks for the video clip and post University81. I'll check it out soon.

I was just wondering- are you folks using the Furman as an actual high gain preamp to create the distortion? Like a distortion pedal?

Or using it as an overdrive pedal to push the amp (hence the term overdrive) into distortion?

So, have you used or are using the PQ3 to actually CREATE distortion? (as a dirt pedal)

Or to overdrive an amp INTO distortion? (as an overdrive pedal)

I like using eq pre and post distortion, like using a 10 band MXR or a Furman PEQ3 and a 10 band on the amp's effects loop. I sometimes use a dummyload and plug a 10 band eq between the dummyload and my Mesa Boogie 2 90 because I rather eq what's coming out of a 4 x 12 than using the eq from the mic pre, it sounds more natural to my ears.
