Hey all,

I like Metallica and I'm sure many of you also do :) Sure, they have some amazing classic tones like the ones from the Black album and later records like Load and Reload (Garage Inc. too btw). Sure, I like the older old stuff too but I'm a sucker for their more modern tones. I also really dig James' recent rhythm tones where he started to blend tight Boogie tones with the more loose and fuzzy Diezel sound. So that tone, basically the 72 Seasons tone is what I wanted to try to recreate. I don't have a Mark IIC++ or a VH4 (they also used a modded Marshall for the new record, don't own one of those either). I do have a Diezel VH2 though and a Boogie Mark V 35 so that's what I wanted to use for this alongside my ESP LTD Iron Cross with the EMG Het Set.

I probably didn't get the tones 100% right but I do think I got pretty close.. Here's my attempt and feel free to let me know how far off I am haha:

Please post the audio clips from a Soundcloud account or other audio only sharing service and then I’ll listen.

Not a fan of sound cloud. The quality was so bad that I stopped posting there years ago.

Really enjoyed this video brother. My settings on chan 3 and 4 of my Diezel VH4 are fairly similar to yours. I think pushing certain frequencies pretty hard (particularly treble and presence) is necessary to bring out the attack and aggression in the Diezel VH heads.

Yeah those amps can benefit from more extreme settings to open up the sound.

He used a Bogner Ubershall on new album with Marshall’s according to Kirk in new guitar world . Don’t hear it at all ( the Uber )

Hmmm don't know.... could be but Fidelman had stated that they used the IIC++, modded Marshall and VH4.

Sounds pretty damn good to me man - enjoyed the video

Hetfield's base amp tones for rhythm was the Jose modded Marshall that Friedman repaired during pre-production. The VH4 was used to color that sound particularly in filling out the low end. The Mesa Mark was prevalent throughout the record as well, as was the Wizard MC. There was mention of the Bogner Uber as well, but I am having a hard time hearing it on the isolated tracks.

Your vid sounds good. Better than their tone on the album.
I find the 72 guitar mix too bloated and compressed. Where is the crisp Marshall clarity and cut it should have, same as from the IIC+?. I get the VH4 sound in there is dark and compressed, but the other amps should have been more prominent.

Sounds damn good man. Love your tones.

While the new album sounds great, imo, Ride had there best raw tone, that album marked me for life , such a raw and aggressive tone. Just before they matured on Master. Master had o more polished tone, still an awesome tone, but Ride had the ultimate Metallica tone imo.

Wont ever change for me.

The new tone on 72 seasons is not good . Desth magnetic sounds like death metal compared to it. The vocals are good on new album. . It’s catchy . But … no balls
