Currently I am running my Les Paul through at Marshall 1987X using a Carl Martin PlexiTone. This works great for 70s era tones. Now I want to look at taking it up a notch. So what gets me up to 80s levels of gain... say GNR AFD levels of gain?

Suhr Riot or Cmat Mods brownie! Both are voiced like a marshall, the brownie does everything from jtm to hot rodded jcm type tones.

I own a Plexitone, and if you can't get 80's era level of gain boosting your Marshall, your doing something wrong.

Your Marshall Stock does 70's tones.

The Plexitone with 3 levels of gain can do 80's, 90's 2000's

Get a attenuator and get that Master volume up.

I didn't hear super high preamp gain in AFD as much as what sounded like cranked wide ass open with some little bit of boost.

Not sure what tubes you have in your Marshall. That may be a way to get a big more crunch.

You're also welcome to borrow my crunch box again if you want.

This.. that CM pedal has tons of gain on tap from what I heard in the Pete Thorn demo? Try hotter pups for one I would think. What are you using? The 80's was defined by the JB, SD, and other "hotties" going into JMP/2203 type amps that were minimally modded or with an added preamp tube. Even the added preamp tube on the AFD #36 is not that gainy. It was done tastefully. Essentially something pushing that circuit. Why not install a MV in that 1987x? I have a DIY one I built a few years back. Sounded great with an attenuator or the PPIMV I tried. Or hell, rewire it to a 2204.

Can the 1987 be modded to 2204 specs?

I agree with many other guys here, a 1987 just needs a solid boost in front. I prefer the generation 1 or 2 OCD with my Marshalls, I dime the output, and only put a touch of gain, but it sends the right frequencies out for boosted Marshall tones.

Here is a Video of a Marshall 1987 boosted with a Carl Martin Plexitone

Sounds pretty heavy to me

Ok, that was funny....

A post of the OP, playing his own rig, in his own thread....

Yeah man, easily. You have Volume I and II right now. One will become the preamp gain, the other will become the master volume. It involves moving some wires around and changing a few resistors and caps on the board. It is not that hard at all. Compare any layout at ceriatone or metro of a 2204 and 1987x and you'll see there is very little work there. The latest vid of the gain achieved is plenty of 80's riffing though! Maybe a teensie weensie TS-9 boost. Why re-invent the wheel right?

Just run a od pedal in front of the Plexitone. Kick it on when you need the extra gain.
