Is that there is just wayyyy too many options! I decided to try some of the ownhammers today because they are so cheap. I wanted to compare them to the to the free impulses out there. To be honest they aren't light years ahead but they do sound fantastic consistently across the board. There are plenty of free resources out there that can sound excellent but you also have to sort through so less stellar ones to get there. I specifically wanted to try the blackbacks as to me they seem to have a bit more bite than a standard greenback. Glad I did as I a very impressed. Surprisingly, I am using a G12T75 with a 57 on it and blackback with a Royer 121 and really digging the tones I am getting. Suhr Iso from the amp and into a hotplate and the tone is killer. I spent an afternoon yesterday comparing my weber legacies, g12-65, and greenbacks to impulses and although I love to track with the live feel of the amp, on playback, the impulses are beating my mics. Now take into consideration that I don't have cash for serious converters or preamps (or a Royer). The argument that "a real cab will always sound better" definitely does not hold water here when you consider the preamps and converters most of us have at our finger tips. This is a no brainer for home recording if you ask me. I haven't even really spent much time on the ownhammer mixes yet either! Great stuff.
Another really important observation is that there def. was a difference in sound for me when comparing my cab mic'd up in an open room to the one that I had surrounded with acoustic paneling and moving blankets. That air moving and where it goes has much more of an effect on the tone than I would have thought. You might not notice it in a final mix but when you compare the two, there is something that happens to the high end. Guess we know why all the top dogs have tracking rooms!
