Hi there,

I thought it might be a good idea to start a tube configuration topic.

The basic idea is:

1. Which powertubes are u using and at what setting (mV)
2. Which pretubes are u using in V1-V6 (special V1 or High gain selected etc etc)
3. Why did you choose this mix (What kind of sound does it produce etc etc)

I got mine stock setup as:
1. Sovtek 5881 @65mV Ruby EL34 @ 70mv
2. V1-V6 Sovtek 12ax7

Changed it to:
1. JJ 6L6GC @ 68 mV Tung Sol EL34B @ 75 mV

2.
V1 Tung Sol V1 selected 12ax7
V2 JJ 12ax7 High Gain selected
V3 Tung Sol 12ax7 High Gain selected
V4 Tung Sol 12ax7 High Gain selected
V5 Stock Sovtek 12ax7
V6 Tung Sol 12ax7 balanced

3. More crisp sounding EL34 and more "brown" sounding 6L6 side

V1 - Mullard
V2 - RCA
V3 - RCA
V4 - Mullard
V5 - Ruby AC7
PI - RCA

6L6's - Stock @ 66mV
EL34's - yanked for a pair of Svetlana 6550's @ 76mV.

Chose these because they sound better than stock. 6550's give better definition overall to the sound at high volume/gain.

V1- Raytheon Blackplate
V2- Raytheon Blackplate
V3- Old EI (sounds better than my old Mullards)
V4- RFT
V5- Telefunken
V6- Raytheon Blackplate

6L6s - Stock 60mv (Going to change to Valve Art KT88s)
EL34 - NOS Siemens RFTs 72mv

I'm interested in the 6550 tubes for my EL34 side of the gain channel because THE ONLY thing I don't like much about my Renegade is the High Gain tones (gain knob pass 1:00)

my next project is just to get a matched quad of 6550's and stick them all in the amp. The EL34's went back in for the time being since my only 6550 pair belong to the titan.

I got something sick cooking up for you guys though. hopefully I'll have it posted by the end of the night.

Nice Thread!! Im looking into retubing my Renegade head so keep em coming. Right now I have all stock tubes in. I read that the 6550 is a great tube to put in the EL34 side but there are quite a few different type. Im still wanting the Marshall vibe but with more thump and thickness without sounding weak and all compressed. Also looking into getting all new preamp tubes and as i can see is some guys have gotten quite adventerous with mixing and matching. So keep em coming so I have an idea or where to go :)

just drop a full quartet of 6550's in. I've got a full set on order myself. They're going to have the least amount of compression (based on how I've heard them react in my other amps) and an extra bit of percussive attack to the notes.

I replaced the 6L6s with KT88s and am quite happy with the results. More sustain and drive now.

I tried the preamp setup you had except for these changes:

V1 - tungsol hi gain
V2 - jj ECC83
V3 - tungsol
V4 - stock
V5 - stock
V6 - 5751 jan phillips - balanced

Stock el34's
Replaced 5881's with gold lion kt66's

Wow what a difference. The preamp change really woke this amp up. I can run the clean gain 1/2 way an get great clean tones but now when I cranked the clean channel I can go from bluesbreaker tones to ac/dc crunch. The gain channel is now unreal. For my style of playing (blues an classic rock) I never have to go past noon on the gain but I have plenty there if I do. The 5751's in the PI slot let the power tubes sing more and they actually quiet the amp down quite a bit. I would recommend this preamp tube change for anyone with the renegade.
