Do you feel it competes with the vocal eq range too much? Vince Neil, Steve Pearcy, both thrashed vocals from years of trying to sing over loud slicing SLO tone? I like my SLO a lot but when I play my 5150 III it sits better under the vocals although I usually end up using the SLO. My voice is thrashed and I want to save it so I might start using SLO less

Niel and Pearcy were hacks to begin with, and their voices certainly weren't going to improve with age, regardless of the amps they were singing (and I use that term loosely) over.

Ya, I'm a huge Crue and Ratt fan and their voices definitely didn't worsen due to Mick and Warren's amps...

Does anyone here sing or scream with an slo in your band? If your a guitarist only you may not understand. It's a very present midrange tone that lays right where the vocals should be. Maybe with a good PA it would be different. I know many here dig the slo including me. I just wonder why it's not used more by big names. I have been using vintage 30s and that may be what's making it too middy. I did finally hear it through some pre rola celestion greenbacks and that was the best it's sounded.

GB's allow you to open the mids up. I prefer the mids between 6 and 7 with GB's. I don't enjoy the amp as much with V30's. I just think they accent the same high midrange, so not very complimentary.

What's David Coverdale's excuse? Oh wait, DeMartini played in Whitesnake too.

I'm gonna guess it was years of coke and the party lifestyle that destroyed most of the 80s rock singer voices.

intelligent way of thinking about the guitar's place in the mix.

i'm really aware of that element of my sound but more often it's about controlling bass because those frequencies are easier to run away without noticing. the highs only cause issues when they are hashy and volume isn't balanced with respect to the sound of the band.

soldanos don't give me that impression normally.

100% agree...

I gigged with one last spring for a few months. Right next to me, and I sing 10 out of the 44 we do. Never had a problem hearing myself...you could ask the same question about Marshalls too, they seem to sit in the same place frequency wise. I use G12 65s in my cab though...
